So Naismith has been moved to the inactive list. I wonder if they've done this now to allow them to sign someone via the SPP before it closes. That doesn't seem especially likely, but the timing is interesting.

I said 3 years ago that Naismith would never play again. So no surprise here. We all know how cranky I've been about that crazy 3 year contract.

What this does is open a spot in the mid season draft. I doubt that we would be looking at someone to add in the SPP, but you never know. It seems like we have a pretty deep list as it stands now.

The may also be some TPP concessions by moving a player to the inactive list.

Agreed, Ralph. I see little value in keeping him beyond this season, even as a Rookie. He has been on the list since 2014 and has played a grand total of just 30 games! Time for us and him to move on.

Of course they ignored it, AGM's aren't for uncomfortable questions. I'd suggest that the contract was for three years because the annual $ were low, just spreads out the payments even if he doesn't play.

Crows practice game against Brisbane just finished, got thrashed by 14 goals but a lot of their senior players missing. Josh Rachelle the standout for the Crows, taken with the pick we were angling for but really never had a hope of getting for Dawson.

Sinclair would have retired last year by all reports if Naismith didn't do his knee, so I can still see how there is a spot on the list for Naismith if by miracle he can stay fit.

So disappointing - while of course Nankervis is having a great career at Richmond, I still reckon if that call was to be made again (yes I know Nankervis was out of contract (I think?) and looking for opportunities - but it did to some degree come down to Nank v Naismith), they'd go the same way. Just a shame his body has hobbled him so badly.

Hoping the one positive from Jordan Dawson's departure is that it has freed up our cap space enough (5 x $600k?) to sufficiently re-sign McDonald & Heeney and ward off any advancing offers. Hoping this gets done sooner rather than later. P.S. Hewett's departure will have also freed up our cap by some extent.

I'm also hoping with Buddy's multi million contract expiring this year, that it will also give us enough space to re-sign our emerging stars in coming years, even if Buddy decides to continue for another year on reduced money (he'll be FA & may get external offers).

Not sure if we'll have enough money in the kitty to chase a big name but happy for club to go on player retention strategy from here on end & dig up money ball gold like Hickey along the way (hoping Paddy ends up being another).

No one in fan land really understands or can closely speculate the TPP situation at any club as contracts are for unknown amounts, except for Buddy's which was set in stone by the VFL and then leaked to the media and therefore fans by Hawthorn.

As to our TPP next year and into the future -

Only Ladhams recruited this year, wouldn't be a big contract plus Paddy McCartin on a modest contract you'd think.

Can't remember the exact amount (someone here will know and tell us) but Buddy this year is down $600k? on his peak year last season.

Dawson was going to get a contract in the $500-600k range, that's TPP not spent this year.

Heeney is already purportedly on an annual amount that wouldn't be increased in his next contract, given it was overs last signing and he's yet to become a league top 10 player.

Hewett was released partly you would think to free up several hundred thousand this year and into the future

There will be a long queue at the exit door this year, freeing up more TPP. Clarke, Taylor, Sinclair certainties. highly likely depending on circumstances in jumper number order, Naismith, JPK, Gould, Reid, Franklin, Ronke, Bell, COR, Fox.

That's a possible 12 but we won't cut that many but it does look like major TPP relief next year and we may even have spare cap this year which we can bank for future use.

Think we'll be bigger players in the trade period this year.

Angus Anderson awarded the Frank Burton Scholarship that assists academy players relocate to Sydney, in Anderson's case, from Coffs Harbour area.

One assumes the club believes he has a bright future, fingers crossed.

I think that our Cap will remain pretty tight. We still have to re-sign players like Heeney, McDonald and Lloyd this year which won't come cheap. I think that Buddy is on around $1 million this season, his last on the mega 9-year contract. If he retires then that will obviously free up a bit of space going forward but if he signs on for another season he will still want a hefty packet. That will be an interesting one to watch.

Should progress nicely now that he's fulltime with our academy as opposed to doing it remotely from Coffs.

Any need for the condescending tone of that comment? Totally unnecessary.

All I said was that if Naismith by some miracle stayed fit, I could understand how they may see a spot for him on the list - not that they should keep him or give him a new contract.

It was said on a number of occasions that Sinclair had all but hung up the boots last year but stayed on. If he was to go, our ruck stocks would be Hickey, plus Ladhams, plus part time at best in Amartey and McLean, and then a very very raw McAndrew (who looks a long way from AFL standard at this point).

We may well look to trade for another ruckman - would not suprise me at all, also noting we have someone in the academy over next couple of years currently showing good potential.

But in absence of that, and noting it would be on minimal $, they might give Naismith another year if they think after the long recovery he might get a change of luck.
