Clarke is a far better in that role than Wicks. I don't think Campbell is ready for that role. I doubt Clarke looses his spot and the positives he brings far outweigh his negatives.

Yes that is my understanding. The umpire’s call of ‘stand’ is the point at which the defending player is no longer able to move and all other players must vacate the protected area. (Players’ momentum takes them over the mark all the time; they must be given time to move back until the ump calls ‘stand’.
In the Paddy incident the ump didn’t get a chance to call ‘stand’ because Paddy (not having heard the whistle) played on immediately.Comment

Without commenting on the Paddy free (against), I don't think the above is right. Players aren't allowed to come over the mark. Sometimes they'll be given a little leeway if they are contesting the ball, and their momentum from that takes them over the mark, but in general it should give rise to a 50m penalty. Witness one paid against Reid either last week or the week before when an opposition player took a mark in our attacking goal square and Reid immediately moved towards him. Reid wasn't given the chance to reset and pull back.Comment

Whether the stand rule applies in this case is irrelevant as the Collingwood player moved forward over the mark, it should have been 50m penalty to Paddy. My take on what happened is that Paddy didn't hear the umpire call mark, saw Johnson coming at him, must have thought it was not a mark and hence to play on, and then played on.Comment

Loved Rampe's effort to stop that goal but I would also like to acknowledge Blakey's efforts in the last quarter when it looked like Collingwood were coming. Some great tackles, spolits and the dashes out of the backline using his speed were great.Comment

We are unbeaten when Clarke is in the side. I'm not suggesting that he is the difference but he certainly has made an impact. The beauty of him tagging a half back rather than a mid is that his disposal errors are not as costly in the forward half as they would be in the back half. Campbell, Wicks, Bell et al have not shown the ability to shut down a half back like Clarke. Kudos to him - he's making the most out of his ability and performing a selfless role.Comment

That's my overall take on the incident too, having now watched a replay. If the umpire wasn't sure whether McCartin and Johnson both knew a mark had been paid, he could have stopped the game, reset the mark, pulled Johnson back and allowed Paddy to take his kick.Whether the stand rule applies in this case is irrelevant as the Collingwood player moved forward over the mark, it should have been 50m penalty to Paddy. Spot on . Collingwood had to completely change there structure such was the non impact of Daicos in the first qtr . That’s a win right there . Clarke can definitely cough it up and the pressure early was immense but he has also being playing on the opposition intercept markers such as Howe at stages and nullifying their impact as well .We are unbeaten when Clarke is in the side. Campbell at this stage is not quite there and I also don’t think he has the tank , definitely something you need come finals when it goes to a new level .
Clarke has flaws but he’s doing what he’s asked .

My read of the stand/outside 5m is it relates to how you're able to behave after the umpire has called it, but it doesn't mean that you're able to infringe on the mark if it's not called.Yes that is my understanding. In the Paddy incident the ump didn’t get a chance to call ‘stand’ because Paddy (not having heard the whistle) played on immediately.I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment

Yeah it was very poor from our supporters and quite frankly embarrassing . How quickly we forget when Goodes was being booed constantly .Well, they could say the same thing about the booing of Ginnivan. It’s very poor form. Plus the way the big screen came back to him for a second round. I was very disappointed &, frankly, embarrassed by that.
That’s not us. And I’d like the club admin to come out and say as much. It’s moronic.
The poor guy had just done a hamstring I thought our supporter base was above that

Watching Horse's presser after the match, he seems very happy with what Clarke is doing, and rightly so. He was given the job of shutting down Daicos and did it very well. Yes, he's not the most efficient ball user, but he cut one of their few elite ball users right out of the match.Spot on . Like most things in life the supporters were too easily influenced by the talking heads on our TV sets. I was also disappointed the young guy got booed.Comment

Williamson, from what I have seen over a few seasons, could possibly be the worst AFL umpire going around.....and that's saying something.Yes. The rule reads as a), b), c) are all “ands”
Mongrel Punt article has a nice description.
Including: “Nathan Williamson may be a nice guy. He has lovely hair and looks in ripping shape, but this reeked of an umpire imposing himself on the contest. He ran in like his butt was on fire and called a deliberate behind, which gave Johnson a goal and switched the momentum.”
I noticed him a few times being overly keen to award a dodgy free.
The same article also singles out Clarke. Doesn’t mention the disposals but I think it’s pretty accurate.
Anyone notice on Friday night, Luke Darcy yet again calling Stevic "one of the best in the business"? As Deja said last week, it must be in his contract to say this......either that or it's just code for "thanks for 2016".

Yeah, I agree to an extent....and was shouting "stop putting his face up on the big screen then, it's making our fans look bad"....but the sooking from Vic journo's is over the top frankly. They'll clutch at straws sometimes just to make the Swans look bad it seems......and some Pies fans and the Pies player who brought it up have very short memories it seems when one considers what Goodsey had to endure for months on end.Well, they could say the same thing about the booing of Ginnivan. It’s very poor form. Plus the way the big screen came back to him for a second round. I was very disappointed &, frankly, embarrassed by that.
