If I was another club I'd be making a better offer than the Lions, although I know the Suns have ruled themselves out.

I know that the Weagles are keen on Robertson, and the Lions have said he's a "required player". In my experience that means they'll let him go if the price is right.
Whike I share your distaste for the current trend of players demanding trades to one club only, rarely, if ever, does sending a player to the PSD result in any lasting benefit to the donor club.

GC did it with a player a few years back (he ended up at his desired club, Carlton anyway) and Vict clubs still continue to pilage the Suns anyway. Similar with Port who years ago sent a player to the PSD but never really gained anything from the action.

Agree. I dont think anyone is listening to the PSD "send a message". But bulldogs are a type of club that will self-harm to harm someone else.
Reminds me of the old tale. A farmer is out in his paddock and he digs up an old lanten. Gives it a rub, and a genie appears. The genie says: "I will grant you one wish for anything you desire". The farmer thinks for a minute, and is about to say his wish when the genie interrupts and says "...but whatever you wish for, I will give your neighbour double". The farmer considers this change of events, thinks deeply, and then says to the genie, "I have made my decision, .... I wish...... to go blind in one eye".

Dawson, Rankine and Horne-Francis all wanting to go home to SA, and all the Geelong guys wanting to go 'home' (let alone lesser profile cases like Darcy Tucker back to Norf) are the best illustration of why we desperately need to defend the Academy at all costs.

More than that, they need to revamp the entire free agency system and play hardball with the players union, if necessary. For a 19 year old to "demand" to go home is INSANE. If you accommodate those requests, teams like Gold Coast will never be relevant. Players shouldn't his restricted free agency for six years and the payout for poaching them should be SEVERE (In the NHL it used to cost them FIVE number one picks..don't believe me? Look at what the price the Carolina Hurricanes would have had to pay the Detroit Red Wings if the Wings didn't match their offer for Sergei Fedorov...which Detroit did match in the end). Once a player has been in the league for 10 years, it should be there choice. I remember Papley demanding to go home at age 23 to Carlton...yada yada...girlfriend unhappy...yada yada. Guess that stuff didn't matter once the team became good again. 18 year olds used to go to war against their will...I don't really need to hear the men who are privileged (and worked hard to be so) to play a sport and then complain about the singular price you pay to be in that business...freedom of movement. Professional sports is unlike any other industry and if you do not reign in this insane player movement, you may as well contract the fringe teams entirely.

Jason Horne-Francis and Junior Rioli find a new home at Port Adelaide as part of a four-club trade that was approved on Monday

i'm slightly surprised that GWS want to trade up if they're after Cadman. However, if this deal is done, then I'm thinking North might take Wardlaw and Tsatas given they currently play together at Oakleigh (like Rowell and Anderson did). Might be very clever work by North to feint for Cadman and scare GWS into trading up for nothing.

That’s not correct. Papley’s father was ill and Tom wanted to live near him. Tom has made clear his request for a trade at that time was never about wanting to leave the Swans. Fortunately Papley senior’s health improved and both the Papley family and the Swans benefited.

I get they had to get something for Horne-Francis given the risk of diminishing returns next year if they tried to hold him, but this is madness from Norf if it is true that GWS were after Cadman. A side that has an emerging midfield and capacity to supplement it with the rest of their draft picks over the next two drafts, but crap KPP prospects (bar Larkey) and they just hand over the stand out in the draft to one of the fellow cellar dwellers? They are such a crappy club.

Really? From what I remember his girlfriend wanted to be in Melbourne but if that is the case, and I have no reason to doubt that it is, then that rehabilitates his request quite a bit to me. Knock me down the ladder one place for being ill-informed. But I stand by my general philosophy that the current free agency rules are madness.

Tom (and the Swans) treated the information about Tom’s personal issues as private at the time. It was only after the issues were resolved that Papley spoke about them and explained his reasons for seeking a trade.

In the meantime fans speculated, including here on RWO, with ‘blame the GF’ being a strong causal contender. I think the speculation is what you recall.

Incidentally Tom’s GF now lives in Sydney.

Going through the Mega Deal, I thought everyone did okay except GWS. As someone said before, they are such a dumb side. It's dumb for the Giants to trade 2 first rounders for 1, since they need at least 2 to have any chance of keeping 1 of them. Now they will train whoever they pick with Pick 1, who will go to Geelong to replace Hawkins.

Yes there was a lot of speculation about the reasons why he wanted to be traded. I recall his manager saying some rubbish excuse about Papley not being happy and that he wasn't being supported by the club with regards to accommodation.

If GWS are so mad keen on cadman, I wonder if they will bid for Ashcroft. They may not want him, which is good for Brisbane

I’m pleased to report after watching Fox Footys trading half hour show tonight that

                                - Port will win the flag next year
                                - GWS will be back in the finals because of a first year KPP
                                - Essendon are winners because they ‘tried something’ with the Setterfield deal
                                - Cadman is apparently a combo of Charlie Curnow and Jeremy Cameron
                                - GWS have traded/are trading out two year inside midfielders in Taranto and Hopper, but boy, going after slow old O’Meara is so smart
                                - Fremantle and Melbourne both won the same deal involving Jackson

                                I mean, “just do something”.
