Harley has too much integrity to be head of the VFL.
For the record, Lyon had 12 month to run on his contract at the Saints but used a slippery get out clause to exit when the Saints took ages to offer him an extension.

I’m not trying to argue the merits of it, just to say, when it comes to Beveridge, or hell, anyone, anything is possible.
'Delicious' is a fun word to say

Lyon will have the job if he wants it I reckon.
Hard as nails but would probably need to mellow a bit in this day and age. Home truths not as palatable as they used to be. Longmire seems to strike the right balance between honesty and empathy with guys a lot younger than himself.

From what I've heard, Harley may have been interested in the AFL CEO role but has not got it. However, what I can't help but wonder is whether he might go for the position recently vacated by Brad Scott: Head of Footy Operations (or whatever it's called).
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

Too much integrity to be Head of Footy Operations LOL

A $1.8M salary. Trust me, there will be a bunch of them running for it. All with their speeches about how "integrity" underpins
everything they do at the ready. It's not going to make one iota of difference whoever takes over the VAFL from McLachlan.

Funnily enough I bought it a couple weeks ago, but can't bring myself to start it. I'm worried it will just put me in a bad mood,
and make me even more cynical (if that's possible) about how the upper levels of footy are run. Without going on too much
I work in a not unrelated industry and have done my entire working life and when I read about some of these spuds "running"
clubs and in the AFL, I just think to myself they wouldn't get past first base in the game I'm in. They'd be sent packing and
sent broke really ****ing fast. They are just too dumb. It really is that simple. It's such a pity. Footy when it's being played
on the field is such a great game. It deserves a bit better I tell you. But I suppose I'll get to it (the book) in time.

Yes I suggested Thorburn's past might qualify rather than disqualify him for the Essendon job, not because I was unaware of his past, but because of my awareness of Essendon's past.
This is a club that has lost draft choices for salary cap cheating more times than any other team, has a 30 year history of predatory player trading, stooped to tanking for picks and of course the drugs saga - when it comes to dispicability, they are an almost perfect match.

I disagree, the competition is showing many alarming signs, just as it was in the early 80's - the solution is the same now as it was then. A strong leader who isn't part of the boys club, and is capable of ignoring the vested interests and establish proper governance.
If it's happened once, it can happen again.
I retain an iota of hope.

The AFL is all about the Holy Grail - revenue. Execs remuneration is based on revenue.

Their whole being is about increasing revenue and protecting the brand so bad press doesn't effect revenue. It's why they are shamelessly in bed with the social scourge of betting agencies when they should make a moral stand against it.

If they made their Holy Grail the betterment of football, decisions would be made a lot different. The VFL needs a massive injection of integrity.

Read the book, it will disturb your sleep patterns LOL

Lyon had a 4 hour talk to st Kilda today. Looks like THE PRICE IS RIGHT. Come on down Ross.

If I was a Saints supporter I would not want Lyon back as coach after he previously deserted the club. How can you trust him? Actually I don't think I could trust the club as a whole, the way they have performed on and off the field.

So that's why Ross has refused all other offers lately.

They were a major surprise when they were included in the VFL competition when it was formed in 1896.
Their inclusion, rather than far more powerful alternatives, was to ensure none of the teams that was forming the new league would have a winless season. If memory serves, it took them more than two seasons before they won their first game.
They were included to be the leagues designated losers - and you have to admire the way they have by and large stuck to this task. Such dedication to self destruction, it's inspirational.
They still hold the records for lowest ever score, longest losing streaks, most wooden spoons and fewest flags - excluding three of the expansion clubs. Their only "blemish" in the latter was when they beat a collywobbles afflicted Magpies by a point.
The Saints are the gift that just keeps on giving.
