AFL Draft Combine 2022: Schoolteacher Joe Richards called up | CODE Sports

Never heard of him. How many little guys can we afford to take? I'm not sold based on that snippet.

This is often the reason why aboriginal players drop down the draft rankings. They don't put the time into some parts of their development, so recruiters are uncertain how they will go at AFL level.

Shai Bolton was spectacular in 2016, but he was a showboat, and still is. There were questions about his work ethic. But look how he's turned into such a star.

We don't often get high draft picks, so we want to use them wisely. I can't disagree with our conservative drafting policy, but it's also a reason why we don't draft many aboriginal players.

Trying to project how 18 year olds will go in the future is not easy. It's a tough gig being a recruiter.

I still think we cut Abe Davis too soon.

chris doerre (espn, bigfooty) phantom drafta couple of days ago. Ist pickmatched by Lions, second pick mayched bydons, then finally henry hustwaite, then oli hotton and finally james van es at 42. seems like a good spread but i would take Ed Allen instead of hotton. 2 bigger mids to help with JK retirement. These 3 plus Francis would leave us with 37 on main list (i think)
Rookies curently 7 , upgrade McLean, Mccartin and Fox, dongrade Bell, Mellican and Naismith or delsit him Not sure he will recover completely like AJ.

Big fan of Ed Allen thought he might of snuck through to our third pick but not a chance now . Huge risk reward but just the pedigree itself is worth the risk I reckon

You can have up to 38 on the Primary list. Up to 6 rookies to a total of 42. Hall-Khan, Fox, Sheather, McCartin, McLean & Wicks are our Rookies. I thought Free Agents went directly onto the Primary List. Plus the contract status page is not showing Paddy as a Rookie. They are all Category A except Sheather. Fox needs to come off the list and be upgraded. We will draft 3. Do there is your 4. But several players might yet be delisted.

I wonder if we will use a Cat B spot on an academy player.

Angus Anderson played for the Allies as an over-aged big bodied inside midfielder.

Will Edwards also played a few games for the Allies as an over-aged key defender. He seems a good size at 197cm 100kg.

Both positions we could use a bit of depth and develop a local player for the long term.

Kaelan Bradtke a 21yo key forward who tested at the state combine also played a few games for our VFL side. But I am not sure we could use a Cat B spot on him.

I was looking at the phantom draft top 25 as predicted in the Herald Sun today (link below). Apart from looking at who they predicted for us (Cowan, Tas; Horton, Victoria for the record), I was interested to see from where these highly touted players originate. 18 players ( 72% ) were from Victoria, 4 (16% ) from WA and the rest consisting of 1 player each from SA, Qld and Tasmania. None from our most populous state.

To me, these figures illustrate the highly unbalanced nature of playing lists at present. Clearly, a lot more needs to be done to promote and develop the game in the Northern states. The Swans have been in Sydney for 40 years now, yet NSW continues to struggle to produce top line players in any real volume. Sure, we can point to individuals like Heeney, Mills, Lizard and Guilden, and a few from the Riverina that have ended up at GWS after playing a lot of their footy at boarding school in Victoria, but its a drop in the ocean compared to Victoria. This really needs to be addressed.

On a positive note for us, that domination of Victorian players is split across 10 Victorian clubs, but the dreaded 'go home' factor will likely persist for many of these Victorian draftees who end up in the Northern states.

The AFL has a perfect opportunity to award the first Magic Round to NSW to help promote the game. Instead, I'm predicting they will play safe and give it to SA. I hope I'm wrong!

The first Adelaide Advertiser (Murdoch so would have been written for the HUN) Phantom Draft this morning. A number of interesting suggestions for picks, numbers adjusted for the extra Ashcroft pick at the top -

First five is as expected, all Vic players

Gold Coast at pick 6 has always been a mystery, suggesting they are keen on WA MVP Reuben Ginbey which won't please WCE, although he may get homesick after two years.

Hawthorn pick 7 Bailey Humphrey who it's been said we're keen on but can't get

Carlton pick 11 Oliver Hollands brother of GC Elijah Hollands who debuted this season after a couple of injury plagued years

Dogs pick 12 SA's Mattaes Phillipou, who we are supposedly really keen on but won't slip to us. Some clubs rate him a top 5 pick

WCE pick 13 draft bolter Ed Allan who we on here have discussed

Sydney pick 15 this will make a poster on here very happy, 'Sydney is turning it's focus to Lachlan Cowan who is a speedy, line breaking defender with a penetrating right boot' Pies are also interested

Sydney pick 19 Olli Hotton 'The Swans are said to be fans of Hotton'

Interestingly they don't have Elijah Hewett, a very good WA mid in their top 25. Did they forget him or has he dropped that far from near top 10 calculations?

Magic Round in SA, we only have one stadium, other than that it's very ordinary suburban grounds that are home to SANFL clubs so not sure how that would work?

Does anyone think we should take Busslinger or Jefferson if they're available?

Cowan is 181cm. Do we need another of his type? Described as a small forward! Please get at least one tall.

He’s listed as 188cm 81 kg don’t know we’re you got described as a small forward and his height from , he plays half back and midfield
Also I reckon he is a little taller than that anyway

You'll be pleased with this gloveski :-) Very much a need, dashing long kicking half back, allows Blakey to move to a wing or the run amok HF position. Looks like he's moved up draft boards, or maybe just ours?

In reply to another post, Jefferson would also be a consideration I'd reckon, but likely to be gone by our pick

Twomey's write up a month ago, my bolding highlighting that he's a left footer - come on down Lachie, you'll be at home here with at least half a dozen other lefties :-)

                            1/12/04
                            Tasmania Devils/Allies
                            Defender/midfielder
                            August ranking: 24

Cowan's excellent season for Tasmania in the NAB League saw him be a joint winner of the Morrish Medal as the competition's best and fairest winners. The rebounding defender, who also spent plenty of time in the midfield, averaged 27 disposals, three tackles and five marks a game, with his penetrating left-foot kicking breaking the lines. Some clubs have him ranked inside the first round of the draft.

Lachie Cowan is today's draft profile on the AFL website.

The HUN said us and Pies were keen, AFL suggested us and GWS are into him which is tricky given how the draft picks are currently held
14 Swans, 15 GWS, 16 Pies, 17 Swans, 18 GWS, 19 GWS. We know there's a lot of misinformation around who clubs are keen on, particularly what we intend to do is tightly held. All fun, only 33 sleeps to go LOL

Going to be very interesting to see who we pick up with our selections.

Most likely at our first selection we will have the likes of Hustwaite , Cowan , Allan.

Hustwaite is an interesting one as he lacks leg speed but has footy smarts . We seemed to have drafted leg speed as a priority the last few years so will be interesting to see if this continues .

Cowan and intercepting defender who also has played a lot of footy in the midfield, has leg speed also

Allan high risk high reward this boy could be anything or a complete flop . I’ll back in his pedigree.

If we end up with one of these three I would be happy
