Surely a few on this list would be better value than Bell

Re the 2020 draft, two of the three main phantom drafts (Twomey and Doerre) had us taking Grainger-Barass before McDonald.

To be fair, RookieMe had McDonald going at two, and us taking Philips at four.

Interestingly, all three had Hollands going at three to Norf. I'm supremely happy with McDonald, he's a beauty and a list need, and I will always thank Papley's wayward goal kicking in the final round of the season against Geelong - but I think Hollands is going to be an absolute cracker for the Gold Coast, so no surprise he was rated so high.

Ha. It does show what a crap shoot those things are. Twomey is usually pretty good, but even he was way off on that one past the first two picks.

Latest form guide from Twomey has arrived, this time with possible destinations/clubs interested. We feature as possibles for -

Oliver Hollands, Vic 183 mid, likely to be gone by our first pick but we're interested if he somehow slides as far as us

Matthew Jefferson, Vic 195 KPF, may not make it to us

Jedd Busslinger WA 196 KPD, a real possibility to be there for our first pick

Brayden George 186 medium fwd, possibly mid, think he's a northern Vic Tatura?. Out with a late season ACL, was touted as likely top 10 pre season, almost certain to be available for us and we're in no hurry for him to play. Shapes as a possible steal

Josh Weddle 192 KPD, quick, has endurance, leap, an awkward height for us

Jacob Konstanty 177 small forward, November birthday, speed, goal sense, tackles, defends, would be a reach at our picks

Harry Barnett 202 ruck, SA, has pace and endurance, will be there at our second pick, as a ruckman a reach but you never know

A number of other players we've been linked to previously, we weren't in this article, thinking here of Hotton and Cowan. Twomey gets good mail about who clubs are talking to but we've pulled shocks in the past. Twomey's Phantom Draft next weekend/Monday will sharpen things a little more

After reading some of the more recent draft reviews and comments, I've had a rethink on the draft.

Chris Doerre thought that Barnett had the ability to play as a key defender. He's a great mark and very agile. In a way he's similar to Keeler, but seems to be ranked higher and is a bit taller. I think he could be a good choice for our 2nd pick, and is likely to be available. If Busslinger or Jefferson are available at our first pick, we might go tall on that one and take a midfielder type with our 2nd.

There were some non-specific negative comments about Elijah Hewett, including references to some altercation with Angus Sheldrick. I don't know what they are, but I would assume that he would not be on our pick list. Maybe someone on here has some details. Hewett might be the one who was rated around pick 10 that could drop to late in the 1st round, with Allen moving up.

I noticed that Hustwaite has been dropping down Twomey's rankings, but remains in the 1st round with most others.

It seems reasonable that one of Busslinger, Jefferson, Holland and Allen would get through to our 1st pick, all having a chance for our selection.

I watched a couple of under 18 championship games and was very impressed with Josh Weddle. He looks an awkward height for us, but think of our beloved Jordan Dawson. Similar height and skill set; quicker, but unlikely to have Dawson's kicking skill. I think we could find a spot for him in the side.

I usually don't like picking a player coming off a serious injury, under the theory of why take a risk when other good players are available. But I might make an exception in the case of Brayden George. We could afford to have him miss a year recovering from his ACL reco, and should be a steal if he returns to full fitness.

If I had my choice, I would hope for Allen or Holland with pick 14, then Barnett with pick 17. I still like Keeler, but if he's not in Twomey's top 30, then we are unlikely to take him with a first rounder.

The good thing is that we have a plethora of choices with our late first rounders and should get a couple of good prospects however it goes.

I reckon that there is a good chance that either Busslinger or Jefferson are available at our first pick and I’d be stoked with either. One war another, there will be a “slider” that’s makes it to us. We are then likely to choose someone else and the media experts will all be shaking their head.

A good post. We’re now at a stage with our list where we can do a bit of needs based recruitment.

I’ve posted before Barnett fits that bill with our second pick. Most draft boards have him 20-25, so it’s not that much over to grab him at 17, and from the glimpses I’ve seen he has a good athletic profile for a ruckman. Not Jackson/NicNat level, but he’s no lumbering slug either. Develop him as Hickeys successor, and if he’s got greater versatility than that, even better.

Pick 14 is more likely to be best available. I’ll be very surprised is Busslinger makes it that far. And while I think we need an inside mid more, if Hollands does fall our way it’d be great. He really does tear up and down the ground all day and has good skills. If he’s half the talent his brother is going to be, he’ll be a winner.

We definitely should get a decent slider with our first pick so we most likely will take best available. Rest of the picks maybe look at needs basis. This draft would not surprise to see a few latter picks become solid AFL players.
Covid has done this group no favours at all so any players injured this year have lost out on showing their true skill sets . That’s were the recruiters are really going to earn their coin

George is an interesting one because he won’t play next year, so he’s the equivalent of swapping a pick this year for one in the 2023 draft.

Then the question becomes: is drafting him at pick 14/17 going to deliver better value than using a similar pick next year, in an allegedly stronger draft?

Not sure but I think the answer is yes

I'm quietly hoping for Barnett. I definitely think we need another ruck. To the extent that I'm wondering if I should send Kinnear a collection of photos? Sinclair saying farewell to the team. Naismith also saying farewell. A few of McAndrew lying on the ground concussed. A few of Ladhams inexplicably trying to concuss opposition players. And perhaps one of Hickey icing a knee?

Maybe the last one should be a pic of Barnett to really drive the point home.
