Perhaps we are expecting Francis or Gould to take over, and there's always Melican. Or is there a young Academy player who has similar talent and attributes to Weddle?
Obviously the boys with the power saw Konstanty as the next best player. It is all subjective after all.

Well, I'm delighted with the way we played it tonight. I don't think our picks were at a great spot in the draft, yet I feel we have made the most of them.

Bidding on Rowston and forcing GWS to waste their second pick was astute - especially since it enabled us to get in another pick ahead of GWS and take Konstanty from under their noses.

Bidding on McIlhanney was very satisfying. I was wondering whether we were buying time but I think it was 90% payback for Dawson. Tells clubs don't f#!@ us over or we'll return the favour. The fact that we literally used the pick given to us for Dawson was perfect.

Sliding back a few picks to get early 2nd and 3rd rounders next year is brilliant! We will still get two players this year that we rate approximately equivalent but we have additionally scored major draft capital for next year. We can use that additional 2023 draft capital to either pay for Academy kids or use towards trading in big fish.

It seems we were never going to take Allan and had our eyes on Konstanty once we were unable to trade forward in the draft.

As for Konstanty, I really like the pick. Not only is he a highly rated player (very arguably the best available), but he fits one of our needs. So far nobody has been able to nail down that defensive small forward post and it has cycled between Wicks, Bell, Ronke, Clarke and even Taylor and Gray. Now we have a player who sounds like he was designed to play the exact role we want. Hard worker - tick. Tackler - tick. Good footy IQ - tick. Applies pressure - tick. Leadership credentials - tick.

Konstanty was rated 22 by Twomey, 16 by Chris Doerre, and 15 by RookieMe in their power rankings. Here's what they wrote about him:

Cal Twomey - Konstanty likes the niggle in the game and prides himself on his tackling and defensive efforts. When he's doing that, the former junior soccer gun gets most involved in an attacking way, too, by hustling opponents and getting on the end of some attacking forays. He has good speed and averaged 15 disposals, six tackles and more than a goal a game at NAB League level this year for Gippsland.

Chris Doerre - As dangerous as any small forward in this year's draft around goal, Konstanty wreaks havoc both at ground level and as a marking target. There is an overwhelming sense whenever Konstanty wins the ball that he is going to impact the game in some way.At ground level he is an effective crumber, getting to the base of packs, cleanly gathering the ball and quickly getting ball to boot for a shot on goal. When the ball is there to be won, Konstanty puts his head over the ball and generally wins it, with a high proportion of the ball he accumulates coming from contested situations.
A threat on the lead and a strong mark overhead, Konstanty despite standing at just 177cm is an above average contested mark. With Konstanty's early ability to read the drop of the ball, it allows him to get into best position in one-on-one and pack situations and with his strong hands overhead often holds onto his marks.
While Konstanty is a weapon offensively, his speed, agility, forward pressure and tackling inside 50 are also notable strengths. He chases and tackles aggressively and is strong enough to make his tackles stick.
Konstanty's performance in the first week of the NAB League finals for Gippsland against Northern was arguably his best game for the year with 19 disposals, 14 contested possessions, six marks (one contested), seven tackles, four clearances, one goal and two score assists.

Shifter Sheahan wrote: A small forward who switched football codes from soccer, which he had played for the four years prior, to the oval ball just two years ago and rapidly put himself on the AFL radar. His pace, evasiveness and pressure game became real weapons in the NAB League this year, averaging 15 disposals, six tackles and kicking 17 goals in 14 matches for the Gippsland Power. He earned NAB League Team of the Year honours and finished runner-up in the Power’s best and fairest award. Also brought his high energy and creative game for Victoria Country, showing his bag of tricks in the National Championships where he averaged 11 disposals and four tackles, while kicking four goals in three matches. His 8.29 seconds on the agility test at the Draft Combine showcased one of his weapons.

Another positive about Konstanty is his November birthday - suggests he could still have a fair bit of upside in him.

I think we'll get two more great prospects tomorrow (although not players who are nearly assured to make it, like those at the top of the draft). There are plenty of players I will be happy with available at our later picks. I'd love Hustwaite. I think Barnett will be gone but you never know. Gilbey looks promising. George could possibly be available. Cowan would be excellent. Gillbee is from NSW. Hayes is a genuine KPD. Hotton is highly rated and quick. Tom McCallum is a key back who played well for the Allies in the National Champs. Jakob Ryan is very versatile. I don't think we'll take Keeler with our next pick.

Somehow we need at least one defender and a ruck between the ND, rookie draft and PSSD.

General consenus here was the merits in trading down, tonight we did that while taking out two clubs along the way. We also now hold a strong hand next year, with a stack of potential points. Two decent picks left for tomorrow. Great work

We pick at 6 tomorrow evening, here's who is rated and still on the board. I know many of us have liked a number of these with our former pick 17 so to get one of them at pick 27 whilst pocketing two more 2023 picks is a bonus, still lots to choose from. In KB we trust

          Hotton - 181 mid/fwd
          Burgiel - 183 mid/fwd
          Cowan - 188 HBF
          Barnett - 202 ruck
          George - 186 fwd/mid
          Ryan - tall utility
          Hayes - 198 KPD
          Gruzewski - 192 KPF/KPD
          Hustwaite - 194 mid

Edit, apologies bloodspirit, just noticed you mentioned a heap of these players in your thread above
          Keeler - 198 KPF/ruck
          Van Es - KPD

Also the picks on Rawston and other guy were free hits, they knew GWS and Crows would match, and it happened at the right part of the draft

Let’s not deny it was satisfying to give the Crows a small amount of payback for Dawson using the pick they gave us.

But I don’t think it was “sabotage and spite” at all. Provided you make one assumption; that we did NOT rate Allan and Weddle as highly as some thought and our target was Konstanty all along.

To be fair if our targets were Allan and Weddle then our tactics make no sense. So they can’t have been.

But if you accept we rated Konstanty higher (on the basis of best available, which is how clubs draft at the top end) it was extremely effective, dare I say cunning.

Bidding on Rowston got rid of the GWS pick between our two first rounders allowing us to trade out the higher for roughly double its value.

We may still be able to get one of our shortlist of possibly taller players we want tomorrow with the 27 from Hawthorn,

So we may end up with who we want plus the Hawks future 2nd and 3rd in the process.

WCE traded down and still got Ginbey plus pick 12 (Hewett)

Incidentally, I thought this was probably the best draft night yet. The pacing was the best it's been so far and it didn't go on until all hours. It helped that we were involved in the most exciting bits and had two picks in the first round. I hope they manage to make the rest of it watchable and enjoyable too.

Playing silly buggers with picks had very little upside and will p1ss other clubs of when next we want to trade with them. Looked a bit amateurish.

Bending over for Mitchell, Aliir, Dawson etc hardly made us look professional either. At least forcing other clubs to match bids made them accountable rather than letting the player they wanted slide (and I cost us nothing. It’s been done to us in the past with our own academy kids. And absolute BS other clubs won’t trade with us based on us selecting their preferred players. If that were the case no-one would trade with anyone. It’s a business. All clubs understand that. If GW$ and the Crows don’t rate their players highly, they wouldn’t have match the bids and we’d have those players.

As per my post above (1) happy to p1ss the Crows off (2) the Rowston bid was a calculated move that should net us around 1,000 DVI points next year. Equivalent to something around pick 14-16
