Unfortunately you cannot change the past and re write history as many want to do. You learn from these experiences and try not to make the same mistakes again. Unfortunately many well intentioned people want to dwell in the past which in many cases adds to the problem

Many other well-intentioned people want to stop repeating the mistakes of the past by facing up to them honestly and bravely and learning lessons from them.

Other people, whose intentions may be a little more questionable, seek to mischaracterise those efforts as a misguided attempt to rewrite history.

Yep, can't have society learning from an uncomfortable past can we? Best we just get the aggrieved to just suck it up and move on eh....

Nah, the first thing a malefactor needs to do is 1) own up to their action, then 2) apologise, then 3) make amends if possible . . . . . and finally, 4) try not to make the same mistake again.
Ignoring, 1-3 ans skipping ahead to step #4, is the act of a scoundrel.

Put it this way. Young people are told ad nauseum how having a child can be detrimental to their lives and career prospects.
Why wouldn't it happen at a footy club? It happens everywhere else. Also, I'd imagine it would be very common for women
to not want to go into extensive details about terminations. It's kinda personal right.
The other thing I've noticed about this debate is how many people have been so offended on behalf of "Clarko & Fages"
(that name has footy show moniker written all over it) and their career prospects. So much worry about career
prospects, so little time.

This is going to cause a lot of historical things to be revisited. But that's ok.

Also the thing about the internal review at Hawthorn is that someone did come and ask the complainants if they had any issues.
And clearly they did. And then they got jumped all over. This stuff is not new in this country. Someone asked Adam Goodes what
he felt about the experience and issues of indigenous people in Australia and he answered them and spoke his mind and look what
happened. He got run out of the game.
That's what happens when a black fella sticks his or her head out of the trench or above the parapet in this country.
It gets shot off. Just so the oh so touchy white fella doesn't have to feel bad about himself once every blue moon.

- Agree we all do not want a white wash. (No good for the games evolution)
- Agree we have a long way to go to improve relationships with the first nation Australians. (Usually judged and considered guilty way before facts are presented)
- Still feel that how these things work out, needs to be consistent for all. (level playing ground for all)
- Essence of what my comments were - hope this is not a sour grapes version of events. Because the media has indicated this..
- And you cannot unhurt people.

We have seen some big footballers have issues after footy eg Carey, Cousins, Mainwearing etc ..

Then my question is What is the AFL's responsibility after footy?

Do we think the AFL needs an after footy care / follow up plan.

How are you coping after finishing footy?

Should this be available to all or just the one's that this review are targeting?

All would be my thoughts. Is this a self help or a follow up help plan?

Guess we all will wait and see!

Yes, after a nice career where they weren't asked/forced to abort their babies, leave their lovers and be deliberately disconnected from their families, some players have problems. I don't aim to lessen the impact of these post career issues but hey, how about we work on making the start of certain players careers more welcoming and culturally safe and humane from the start? I agree with most of your above points but am struggling to see the connection between the issues to be looked at in the AFL's review of the Hawthorn scandal and the issues some players face at the end of their careers.

Also, I find this line a little dubious, "Usually judged and considered guilty way before facts are presented". Err, usually the truths told in the first place ARE the facts. Then the whitewashing begins.....let's call them the 'alternate' facts.....often proven in time to be nothing more than white entitled bull@@@@. We could even call this phenomenon "an AFL Review". Hindsight will be very revealing in this particular case.

To be honest, the AFL has no responsibility for players after their AFL career is over. Same as any employer has no responsibility once your contract is up. They can encourage players to invest wisely, prepare for life after footy, but thats it.
Thats got nothing to do with Clarksons treatment of those players and partners.

It's the AFL's business model. Has been for years, and they don't really care that much who gets crushed in the process.

Wow, some people are quick to judge without listening to both sides of the story

If it comes out that the allegations are 100% true and as told, then great, throw the book at the guilty parties, but the reality is there's two sides to every story and I have no doubt that in this instance there will not only be conflicting versions, but also some perspective on some of the scenarios.

I might be naive, but I find it difficult to believe that Clarkson and the co accused would perpetrate such cruel actions without a) this story getting out years ago and b) countless other players/administrators/club volunteers etc. coming forward with similar stories about their conduct given they have all been in the AFL system for years.

I'm not discounting the accusations; I just won't rush to judge without hearing all of the facts.
