With Grundy coming in we might just see how that settles down first . If we have an above average ruck and can’t address our stoppage and clearance issues next year it simply becomes the personal we are running through there

Oliver won’t come to us. He has revealed in an interview that Beatson who was never going to draft him anyway (as we were needing to match a bid on Mills) made him cry by asking him “why are you so fat” in the interviews leading up to the draft!

The two clubs that have shown “more than just a passing interest” in Oliver

According to SEN there are two clubs who are showing some genuine interest in Oliver. And we're not one of them. (Phew.)

For anyone disinclined to read the article, the two clubs named are Essendon and Adelaide.

I can’t believe the lack of want for Oliver. He is an absolute star. Sure we don’t know the price but we would be negligent if we weren’t enquiring. No to including McDonald but there would easily be a price where we should go for it. Eg I would easily give up our 2023 & 2024 first rounds + Amartey for him.

In regards to future cap problems, I have no doubt we could manage it. GWS currently have several million dollar players. Carlton do too. Melbourne themselves have a few. Hell, we managed to stay bloody competitive with Buddy’s much bigger contract.

Essendon will be offering a future 4th rounder to kick off negotiations. I should go down to the wire.

Can't believe he will be traded. Maybe it's a ploy to shake him up a bit. Can't see him wanting to go to Essendon or Adelaide.

When someone tries to sell something that is valued highly by others, there's usually a problem with that something.

If he's high maintenance, leave it alone.

Maybe but his playing record suggests that there is not much wrong when he crosses the white line. Maybe it’s Clarry who is seeking the ale and not Melbourne. There are lots of maybes. We won’t know anything for sure for some time but I’d be willing to take the risk and I’m normally one in here who is promoting stability and reminding people that for one to come into our midfield, someone has to go out.

100% agree! I don't understand it either as he is an out and out star midfielder who is basically un-taggable!

Or, the someone trying to sell something, doesn’t appreciate its value and doesn’t know how to avoid making a minor issue a major one.

The bloke’s on field record has him on track to be an all time great. He’s uber elite, and has continuously improved everything about his game. - from his running to kicking. Of course, maybe, there is a problem. The alternative view is he’s hyper professional, focused and demanding and feels the club has let him down on his injury treatment.

Oliver would be a great get for the right price, would instantly bring the inside grunt we need. However, only for the right deal and only if he wants to come. I think he would fit in fine and a change of scenery may be the shake-up he needs. He may also really benefit from being outside the football bubble.

I'm with you AB - in fact the only thing more surprising than a lack of interest here is what the heck are Melbourne thinking in potentially moving someone of his calibre on.

Your scenario seems not unreasonable (2 x 1st rounder plus a good best 22 player), but presumably it doesn't have to involve players. The Neale trade was picks 6/19/55 and included a second rounder in return. Beams back to the Pies was picks 18/56 and a future first. Both of those seem somewhat analogous and quite bearable for someone of his quality.

In any event, all hypothetical, doubt he'd choose us and suspect we can't afford his salary (I wonder who the heck can?).
