If (I suspect a very big ‘if’) Reid were to be given another contract, then the more appropriate comparisons might be Alex Johnson (repeated contracts that Alex sadly couldn’t fulfil as a player) and similarly Sam Naismith (though maybe Sam N might have come good this year if we had persisted for one more contract).
As for Reid it will all depend on who we draft or can pick up trade wise as we will be light on with Buddy retiring . He will be the last to sign if at all

Why should Buddy retire?
Sure he's currently about as much use as a cat flap on an elephant house out there, but as BF noted, his actual performance is only of secondary importance to his box office appeal. We must keep him until we have a suitable marquee replacement otherwise membership and attendance will crash.Comment

After 30 years in Sydney, surely we have enough supporters who love the club and join and attend without a superstar. That said, we could do with a Warwick Capper!????Comment

I think there's a high probability that we will lose both McCartin brothers due to concussion and will have to construct a new backline for next year. It won't be easy and could put us out of contention for several years. I often say that football is a game of luck. I think luck will play a major role on how we go the next few years.
We’ve avoided KPPs in the draft like the plague and chose to rely on rookies and injury prone players
We’ve only got our own mismanagement to blameComment

You can’t be serious R&R! We all love Buddy and of course he’s a drawcard, but we’re in deep trouble if membership and attendance were to crash in his absence. Furthermore, it’s not a marquee player we need but a team playing exciting football and winning most games!

Tom is a worry short and long term risk as well so we have 2 defenders potentially being forced to retire.
That being said we have neglected our KPP stocks for years and now its proven costly.Comment

Obviously with Paddy it was a calculated risk we took it payed off in 2022 unfortunately has not this season, that being said Paddy was always a serious concussion away from retiring.

Not so much crystal ball talk but it staggers me how Longmire, Pyke, Mcveigh and Cox can look at the magnets and see Heeney, Will, Buddy, Logan, Mclean and Paps then look at our defense and see Ramps Out, Paddy Out and think we could slot Francis into that fwd line.

I agree that we’ve tended NOT to draft KPPs and it’s quite baffling given the impending retirements of Buddy, Reid and Rampe. It’s a situation made much worse but what’s going on with the former Iron McCurtain.
I think it’s a combination of factors including KPPs being higher risk, and a lack of players we liked the look of in the draft (that’s my interpretation of KBs comments about last years draft).
I suspect we prefer to recruit KPPs via trade / free agency. And I fear our salary cap may have limited our ability to be major players - exhibit A is Aaron Francis.
Ludwig I certainly hope we don’t lose both McCartins. Losing just Paddy would be a disaster for player and club.
Surely we’ll have to be EXTREMELY active in the off season this year? And finally have the cap space to do it?
Not wanting to throw fuel on the fire, but this (not paywalled) article is extremely scathing about our “business as usual” response to the GF annihilation. It’s quite persuasive, and evidence based!

JVR was ours to take and we went for Sheldrick who we didn’t need and frankly couldn’t hit a barn door from 10 metresComment
