Buddy wanted out from Melbourne City so he was leaving anyway. I’m not sure what the situation was with Tippett and Plugger, but Big Bad Barry had to leave the Saints as well. Other than these, I can’t recall any other top player we enticed from rival clubs. We had a reputation for turning average players into top tier like Teddy Richards etc.
This year, as we so badly need 1-2 KPP’s, we will need some creative accounting re our salary cap, just like our Melbourne based rivals seem to be doing, and get ‘em. Fight fire with fire! It’s sickening to see what clubs like Geelong have gotten away with over the years- patently obvious they haven’t played by the same rules as we have and so have signed players with carefree abandon!
The AFL is useless in this regard, as they should have put a stop to this years ago. We just have to find a way around the rules like others have- I don’t like it, but what choice do we have if we want to win a flag?Comment

Plugger was a straight up bidding war, like Buddy and DirtyKurt - with varying amounts of "Swans are a special team" statements.
Barry Hall wasn't quite like that, he desperately wanted to get our of Melbourne and Plugger convinced him that anonymity was possible.
Paul Williams, and Stewie Maxfield were in their prime, Roos, Osborne and Bradshaw less so. Most of the others that ended up high quality, weren't there when they came: Richards, Kennedy, Mummy, Jolley, Craig Bolton.Comment

Craig Bolton remains just about my favourite value pick, in terms of what we got him for (which was SFA) vs what he became.
I saw an interview with Nick Riewoldt after he retired where he was asked the hardest opponent to play on, and he named Bolton. Said Bolton gave him nothing, and every time he thought he had Bolton beat, an arm would slip through and spoil the ball. Described playing on him as hell.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

The art of recruiting is just as much as what you do after the 1st round, or more to the point the top 10, which for obvious reasons have not been available to the Swans for the past decade
I would suggest Chad Warner, Rowbottom, Hayward, Papely, Reid, Gulden, Rampe, Parker, McInerny, Tom McCarin, Armartey, Paddy McCartin, Fox, and Lloyd are good examples of astute recruiting. Through In Dawson who did the dirty on the Swans, none of the above mentioned were first round picks.
It is not just the recruiting staff that makes the decision, the coaches, go home factors etc are all part of the process.
Seems like a very good effort to me!Comment

I saw something in McLean yesterday that makes me think he is worth a try as a key defender. He covers the ground well. He was deep in our forward line and not long after took a good mark in our defensive goal square.
He's not quick or good below his knees, but he competes well in the area and has to size to take the oppositions biggest forward. I think McLean looks a good one on one player in the air. He's proven quite durable as well.
If Paddy retires, McLean and TMac could be a way to fix our defensive KPP problems without having to get a player from the draft or trade.
If we do manage to recruit Himmelberg, then we can play him forward.Comment
