Id say we are watching TDK closely based on Ladhams being a fulltime ruck and Tdk can float.

    Hickey is cooked
    McClean is ok
    Amartey better forward

I wouldnt pay overs for Tdk both financial and Draft picks but i can see why he is on the radar.

Could save money on Mclean and play McAndrew as the back up if we got TDK

We have to be cashed up.

Heeney, Paps, Ramps, Mills etc would have all hit AA and finals bonusses last year.

Reid, Hickey, Ladhams, Paddy would have games played bonuses

Hopefully we learn by the Buddy experience and manage our salary cap judiciously.

A fair spread of ages for the rucks. I consider a 5-year age spacing to be close to the mark for this position.

We may be looking at drafting an 18-year-old ruck in the next two years to replace Hickey.
McAndrew is as good as any draftee is going to be in the next few years, I wouldnt waste a pick on a ruck

There is an Academy ruck who we could probably get as a rookie. He us a big lump of a lad. Last year as an underager he was good.

But the main draft we need to concentrate on speed and good ball users.

Even better if we have one in the academy we can grab later

That means we only need to have one “proper” ruck available for each game. I think Hickey probably has another season left in him, Ladhams is competent and might get better, and McAndrew is developing. So I don’t see getting another experienced ruck as a recruitment priority right now. Especially not a mediocre (poor?) one like De Koning.
McLean’s ruck work has improved hasn’t it. No star, but a good contributor as a second ruck. He seems to have developed a better leap to compensate for his relative lack of height, and he has relatively good hands anyway. I think Joel is the better of the two, but it is handy flexibility to have.

As for Hickey, he had no preseason so that has hurt him badly. I’d be definitely keeping him at least for another year. At worst, we get what we got with Cal Sinclair his last couple of years - some good depth coverage for Ladhams while McAndrew continues to develop.

And if we get King from the Academy as a late pick or rookie, we can develop him the way we have McAndrew. He’s more seasoned in terms of growing up with the game, but still a kid who’ll take time.

                    King? Do you mean May?

The big improvement I've noticed from McLean in the ruck is that when he gets his hand to the ball, he actually tries to direct it constructively. He's had a few lovely hit-outs to real advantage, ones that have set a team mate moving forward.

Yes he has. That is because he is working with the most masterful ruckman of his era. Apparently McLean is a sponge. He is so keen to learn. Dermie says he works harder than most abd Kearns fast.

I'm not convinced that amartey is the real deal. He was an absolute liability against Geelong.

Crap. He has to work on holding marks. But earlier in the season he was clunking them. Wait. You pull the plug on players far too quickly

I think Amartey's poor marking the past couple of games is just an anomaly. He's always been a very good mark, but was a wayward goal kicker. In fact, in his draft year he was in a position to win the under 18 championship game when he took a strong mark at the top of the goal square in the dying seconds of the game, but then went on to miss the easy shot on goal. If he had kicked that goal he probably would have gone top 30 and would be playing for another club now.
