If we are to challenge over the next 3 years, getting Barass makes sense. He is an outstanding player.Comment

The benefit of getting Barrass will be lessened if we land up making a valuable piece we already have redundant. (I know there are those who argue there is uncertainty over Tom's future, but he's back playing now so presumably all looks to be clear.)Comment

Tom is a very good player but, like his brother, he plays too recklessly in terms of protecting himself. I'm not confident about his future. Hope I'm wrong. Harass I reckon could play FB or CHB or interceptor. Fabulous mark and very mobile.Comment

I’ve read that Weagles would like pick 4 plus something for Barass, which is clearly overs for a 28 year old. If the Swans are serious, which seems likely, I’m sure haggling is underway and this article nee see h be part of it.Comment

Just watched a fair chunk of the 3rd qtr of the last Allies game. My God, that McKercher looks good! He is what we are missing IMO, a pure silky smooth Centre Bounce midfielder in the mould of Zach Merrett and Josh Kelly.
He will likely go before our first pick, but if he's there I'd be more than happy to take him as he looks like a match winner!

I would rather us pay a few extra $ and guarantee we get one of the uncontracted talls in the market and save our draft capital .

"Two first rounders" is a bit vague. Picks 17 and 18 are "two first rounders". So are picks 1 and 2. They are clearly not equivalent.
If we had two picks in the teens, as we did last year, I would have no problem trading them for Barrass. But I'd wince (hard) if the Swans gave up even pick 4/5/6/7/8 (or wherever it lands) for a 28 year old who is very good, but has never been spoken about in terms of being one of the top 3 or 4 key defenders in the league. He's not Sam Taylor or Darcy Moore.
Hopefully this is just another media beat up like Dusty to Swans last year and the 8 x $800k for TDK. Media need to be talking about something so they dream stuff up.
As I said earlier, a watershed Trade period and ND for us, could define our next 6-8 years if we get in right or wrong. I'd take McKercher if he's there at our pick, worry about fitting them all in later, you can upgrade with young guns and trade out those displaced.Last edited by 707; 12 July 2023, 07:32 AM.Comment

Surely we can nab one of the free agent KPPs this year (Himmelberg, Silvagni, McKay). I like Barrass, but it's much better value getting a free agent and using our 1st pick on someone like O"Sullivan.
If you look around the league, there are so many solid key defenders who were low draft picks, the Swans included. We should go overboard spending cap space and draft picks on one player. I also think it would be a mistake for WCE to let Barrass go. They really need a pillar in defence to hold things together during their rebuild.
If we keep our current place on the ladder, the back to back earlier 2nd rounders will be very valuable. I was hoping we would be good enough this year, but our performance suggests that we need another injection of talent to keep up with the best teams. Hopefully, we don't squander the opportunity we have with a bit of cap space and a good draft hand.Comment

there is always a cycle when you are in or approaching a window and some point you need to roll the dice to increase the probability of a top4 GF outcome
We peaked a year early is my guess as not many of us saw it coming.
Then when challenged with a serious array of injuries we have been found out.
Paddy Mac was a great cheap draft currency way of making it happen down back last season. But that probably is not an option in 2024 and beyond.
Ruck and KPD and KPF are my key targets and we can genuinely take on the best next season with those 3 areas rectified.
Without those 3 areas really invested into we will be fighting for top8 for a few seasons as a most likely scenario and that is not acceptable given our talent in the squad ready to challenge.
The time is now to tweak those 3 areas with quality and finals ready bodies and that wont be for free to make that happen.........we live in a comp evening environment and we need to pay our way to attract and secure those 3 areas with quality.
Dont get me wrong.......i love a discount and hate giving away draft picks but it is part of the game to complete a squad just like the Cats, Pies, Tigers, Brisbane, Port and Hawks prior have been doing for some time and we did also with the BudLast edited by Auntie.Gerald; 12 July 2023, 11:45 AM."be tough, only when it gets tough"

Another way to look at Barrass is he is the same age as Mcgovern was after their Grand final and got the big 5yr deal.....hardly fired a shot since due to injury
Would much prefer to go after the free agents, if we were to chase a big name for picks id make sure they were 26yr old maxComment
