      For perspective

After six seasons at the Swans, Jones — as well as Pick 56 and a future fourth-round selection — was traded to St Kilda in exchange for Pick 32, as well as Pick 76 and a future third-round selection (tied to Fremantle).

We arent getting much for Stephens

Stephens is a better player than Jones.

Bigger tank, doesn’t get injured, doesn’t have brain fades, doesn’t always fake left then get tackled when he goes right, has better hair.

Reported in newspapers that Melican has re-signed for another year.

Happy to hear of Melican signing on. Wonder if that means club knows it will miss out on McKay? Earlier today, I heard Sam Edmund on SEN reporting that one of the 3 pursuing clubs (us, Essendon & Hawthorn) were not entirely happy with McKay's medical and speculating whether it was a ploy to throw the other 2 clubs off (he didn't name club). He thinks Essendon is leading the race for Ben.

Melbourne will not be contributing 1 cent to Grundiy’s salary, Collingwood will be picking up the agreed sum in the vicinity of $250K or thereabouts for the duration of his original contract. The Swans pick up the balance

Agree that we are not far off with what we have but there are few big IFs

Disagree that our current squad is good enough to dominate and be a top4 at contested footy and for me we need 3 areas levelled up to be a serious weapon in the top4 in 2024. Two we appear to working on in the media ie Grundy and McKay.

Case in point Carlton game and going with a run with slash tagging strategy to minimise Carltons impact at the contest. Even sacrificing Mills and Heeney was an opportunity cost with minimal compelling footy from them to dominate and impact our attack.

                          That just @@@@s me

That is a head wind of concern that we are not even at Carltons level, who I don’t rate that highly vs the top 3 or 4 teams in 2023.

Maybe Grundy playing for us in that game changes it to our favour…yes it would have helped ….…but I think that is a stretch and we need depth to dominate that contested footy via our mids also…. so we have much more flexibility in dictating terms and making it very hard to contain us.

McKay would definitely have helped Carlton sending it in quick to lock us in. So yes Grundy and McKay would definitely be an advantage but with Parker turning 31yrs old and key ingrendet to our mids I think we need more depth at contested footy in the mids

It might not the earth to make that happen for 2024
                          We are well below the top 10 teams on all these indicators, all are below 12;

                          Clearances
                          Contested Possessions
                          Opposition forward entries (18)
                          Opposition Scores from Rebound 50
                          Opposition Scores from Clearances
                          Ruck contests

Four of those would keep us from ever winning a premiership and if they continue, there is only one way we can go, DOWN.

We need a change of coaching philosophy in a hurry so we can gather the group we have next year to change those things that make great sides that we do not have. Even if we get Grundy, McKay seems to want to stay in Melbourne. I do not see McKay as totally needed. We have options and one is going to the draft and getting a Key Back. There are several good candidates. We should play a bit hardball on Stephens as he is a required player, even though he does not have a contract. Try to get a late 1st or early 2nd for him. We need another mid to throw in the mix, either a trade or draft. I see Parker forward next season and a midfield comprising of: Rowbottom (who I think is being wasted by Horse), Papley, Gulden, Sheldrick, Mills, Warner, Roberts, Cleary & maybe a newbie.

Forwards; Clarke replaced by Parker forward. Heeney, Hayward, Amartey, McLean, McDonald, Buller, Papley, Konstanty. Wicks
Backs; Rampe, Lloyd, Ollie, Harry, McCartin, Melican, Arnold, Francis, Magor?, Rankin?, Edwards?, we need backs, runners.

Rucks; Grundy, McAndrew, Ladhams, maybe Caleb May, Owen?

It’s interesting how Goodwin and Kingsley both talked after their games that finals footy is where your plan B is tested

Ie GWS are very much a turnover run and carry team and Kingsley said thankfully when we had to engage our plan B of contested footy it stood up
"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Stephens is uncontracted so we don’t have much clout, similar to Dawso. In any case he wants to be traded so we don’t want a player who doesn’t want to be here- no great loss as he has been average at best and shows that KB and Co can get it wrong just like everyone else.

What change in coaching philosophy are you suggesting Wolfie? Our last quarter fade-outs were most likely due to mental tiredness, but our choice of subs was often very poor, I’ll grant that. I thought that our main issue this year was the injuries to key personnel and the drop in form to players like Chad, Isaac and big Tom. Paps was patchy too. In the circumstances the team did remarkably well to finish in the 8 and with a bit of luck we should have beaten Carlton and then challenged the Dees. I think Horse coached well though I would have played Mills in midfield all game except for maybe the last few minutes.

Some of those fade outs might not have been classed as fade outs if our forwards had kicked straight from dead in front from 30 metres. One culprit did this at least 3 times at absolutely critical times.
