I think Konstanty is more a Papley clone .A small forward who pressures the opposition would be pretty handy in our forward line atm. Kosi and Chandler do it pretty well for Melbourne, both can kick goals but it’s there pressure acts that are the most important to Melbourne’s structure.

We have a habit of bringing in our youngsters to play HF, instead of putting them in their best positions. I really don’t understand the thinking behind this. The obvious player who should be rested there is Parks, given his marking and goal kicking ability and experience- surely he can exert more forward pressure than a kid coming in for his 2nd game! It can be a graveyard for newbies: it has taken years for someone like Wilbur to do a decent job. Horse kept playing Bell there, when we were saying that he should be in the mid, if picked at all!

This needs to change. Understand the thinking in moving Mills back when our defence is undermanned, but playing Harry on Greene, when he clearly is no longer at his best as in previous encounters, was never going to work in a million years. If anything, Mills should have got the job, as Greene is a match winner and has to be nullified- and Gus could have then played midfield where he belongs.

I’m not sure if our fade-out is physical or mental; possibly both! It’s up to our coaching staff to work on this and have better team selections and match-ups. That’s their job and in all fairness they haven’t been doing it well lately, though we all know that we’ve been decimated with injuries.

That’s footy folks. It was a massive improvement on last week .
I think I'm with you. 33 goals, it was pretty entertaining and open game. Four goals up with 13 mins to go I was sure we
we were home but probably ran out of gas. Leaving the likes of highly inventive and intuitive players like Toby unattended
is very dangerous. He is a brilliant footballer. GWS have been competitive in their losses lately so I guess they weren't
going to go away. I thought that Ladhams game was great so I looked him up. 24 disposals, that is damn good.
Mostly we played well. We were unfortunately on the end of some freakish goal kicking from the Giants. They kick
16.6 (still uber accurate) and we win.
Typing this I'm watching us play Collingwood at Vic Park Round 1 1987 on Kayo. It's halftime and we're leading 14.10 to
3.3. Capper has 7 and is on fire, as are the stars of that team, Williams, Healy and Mitchell. So many great players on
        that team.

That’s a great way to recover from our recent “depression” !
They were great times- so much exceptional talent: we should have won a few flags but sadly it was not to be. Nevertheless it was a fantastic time to be a Swan and we smashed our opponents in most games. I remember coming to Sydney. (I’m Melbourne based) and saw us smash the Weagles kicking 200 odd points………..

Yeah, it was a lot of fun. My brother and I moved up here from Tassie to go to uni and timed it well with the arrival of the Swans.
It's interesting. Usually with sport I think current players are more skilled than those in the past. But watching us in full flight 36 years
            ago I'm not so sure.

One interesting stat was Parker’s time on ground at 93% well above any other midfielder for either team.
I was working so only seen a few minutes here and there so I’m guessing on who spent time in the midfield .

Some interesting TOG , Stephens very low for such an elite runner on the wing , Mills and Rowbottom lower than I would normally expect also .

              Parker 93%
              Warner 86%
              Gulden 83%
              Rowbottom 73%
              Mills 76%
              Stephens 71%

              Green 86%
              Kelly 79%
              Coniglio 80%
              O’Halloran 88%
              Perryman 68%
              Callaghan 84%

The last two games have been exact mirror images of our 2022 and 2021 final exits.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

                      Only 31k. Poor.
Giants fans won't travel, swans fans won't turn up if it might rain.. Time to leave the SCG for derby games. It's a soulless Soviet era concrete rabbit warren with terrible access and hyper expensive food. ($2 for sauce?).

All derbies need to be out at Homebush. ANZ (Accor) if both teams are flying. Spotless if they are not. Bring the game to the masses.

Given the horrible morning rain, torrential where we are, that’s a pretty good crowd.

Sorry Barry, we know about your love for ANZ, but how do you connect Spotless (Giant Stadium) with the massess?

Getting back to the game it got me thinking how much luck is needed in this game and I am specifically referring to the timing of injuries to key players. Id Duncan hadn't caused the concussion to Fox he would have played on Toby Greene and maybe he wouldn't have kicked his goals. Also what about copping injuries to Franklin, McCarthy brothers, Rampe all from the same game, then we lose Amarty. Hopefully the footy injury gods will be kinder to us.

All I'm sayin is that 31k for a Sydney v Sydney derby at the SCG is doing nothing to grow the game, if only die hards are turning up.

This game should be the AFL,s promotional event into new fans. Sell a 2 match super-pass to both derbies at Accor. Make it an occasion.

Truly, the SCG is our Palace of Tears - I reckon there was about 50cms between us and 8 points. Sigh.

I'm from the glass half full school on this - any other week we win that game by 5 goals. They kicked 17.2!! (3 of their points were rushed) and I reckon half those goals were from the remarkable end of the spectrum.

Not delighted at our goal kicking (though it really only looked poor relative to their frankly unbelievable kicking) or letting 3 D50 stoppage goals get kicked against us in the final minutes but much more delighted at the intensity and effort generally, leadership from Parker, Lloyd and Franklin and returns to form from youngsters Warner, McDonald and Guilden.

Get a bit more of a sporting chance from the footy gods and we can still turn this season around.

PS And after Q1, it was actually a ripper game of footy - 17 goals to 16, how often do you get that in AFL today? (Maybe that's something the AFL could introduce to encourage more scoring - every other week you have to drop your two best defenders!), Comfortably the game of a pretty ordinary round so far.
