Every AFL club has a list like this. The fact is that the Swan’s are a very well respected organisation who have made the finals more than any other club in the twentieth century. Must be doing something right

It's important to judge a recruit based on the alternatives, rather than basing it on the subjective disappointment of a supporter.
Towers for example,
Sure he wasn't a Petracca or a Moore - but neither of those were available so they aren't relevant.
Dean played 57 games for us, the average number of games played by the selections between him and our next pick was 51. So realy he was actually a touch better than average.
Or to look at it in another way, who would have been a better selection? The only standouts that were available were Kamdyn McIntosh and maybe Mason Wood, due to his late career renaissance.
Towers was average, not a win nor a loss.
Based on the same criteria Rohan and Jones can likewise be seen to be, average picks. No argument regarding Vespremi, Ling, Stevens, O'Keefe, Lamb, Johnston or Willoughby though.
Which brings me back to the question I asked WomblingFree - Any theories as to why Maltopia?
Is it a statistical anomaly which will fade away over time?
Does KB suffer high pick jitters - the way some AFL players get nervous and blow a simple shot straight in front of goals, but maneg the 60metre bombs from tight angles?
Is there some sort of mismatch between Swans culture and high draft picks that impededs their development?
Does it not matter is the slightest where they are recruited, as long as we keep getting good players?Last edited by Ruck'n'Roll; 23 March 2024, 01:33 PM.Comment

Vespremi, Ling, Stevens, Rohan, Jones, Lamb, Towers, Johnston?
Florent and Wilbur picks, glosses over our major fkup that year where we traded pick 18 for Michael Tahlia.
Pick 18 was Sam Powell-Pepper, and pick 19 was Tim English! Both 100+ gamers, the first a top three B&F, and the latter an All Australian ruckman…
Impossible to predict, but what a sliding doors moment!
If we had kept pick 18 and drafted English, then we wouldn’t have drafted and lost Cameron for unders, we might have stuck with Aliir Aliir instead of allowing his trade, and then getting in Hickey.
The Dawson for Ladhams and pick 12 slide back to 16, would have been for different player/draft picks instead too.
I guess a lot of it is tied to the Kurt Tippett trade (which also got us a trade ban), which also may have contributed to us losing Tim Membrey.
We can never know, but a fun yarn.
Michael Talia was a total bomb, whilst Dylan always looked like he had the goods, but couldn’t get it together. He’s the perfect example of the youthful champ who can’t translate his talents to the big time.
Caleb Serong’s game was phenomenal and KB would and should be having sleepless nights over that pick.

With all due respect, Gary Rohan played 100+ games for the club, Zak Jobes 90. Alex Johnston would have been a 100+ gamer if Epworth Hospital had sorted out their clostridium problem. Having said all that, both Powell-Pepper and English would have looked great in red and white.

KB & crew have identified some great talent further out in the draft, we are seeing a host of them driving us up the ladder right now. KB has been very inventive with trading draft picks very much to our advantage, that's an additional bonus.
And if we didn't have Covid lockdowns Dawson would likely have stayed. These things happen. Just worry about the state of our list now and think about what type of players we need to select with our two late first rounders this draft. Only eight months away!
Hindsight drafting is an easy game to play and achieves nothing.Comment

In KB we trust. I don't think you can argue with the sustained success (albeit only winning the 2 GF's in the last 20 years) that Sydney has enjoyed. As alluded to before, you get some right and some Serong. That is the lot of a recruiter. I would rather have KB than anyone else guiding the ship. He is very astute.Comment

Vespremi was before KB’s time. I think we can blame Stewie Maxfield for that one. And fact that Serong barracked for the Swans as a kid is totally irrelevant. Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

Gee wiz
I’m super happy with the glueing together of all recruitment pathways
I’m guessing we got lucky somewhat with Grundy
I’m guessing maybe also lucky with the circumstance with Patch missing a GF team and getting a tap on the shoulder re HFF or not at all (well lucky asking as he can get fully fit and injury free which is a big question mark)
JJ a fairly unique opportunity also via a FA at a young age due to a technicality. Good link gut running addition with great experience in a very good midfield prior to joining and only 23
Hamling good depth when needed
Great picks in the draft. I’m stoked actually !
Complimented via a bullish draft strategy for a few years that has had winners and losers like all drafts but some real gems !!!
Really for me…… it is A ranking now in recruitment
And yes…….i was the guy that was screaming for more specific mature age trades / specific roles to compliment our squad ……but I must say in retrospect it probably happened at the right time and I was a season early atleast in my rants.
Well……as long as we can capitalise on 2024 and 2025 then we have given a great opportunity to our player group to succeed !
2026 onwards will be a serious challenge for us…… I suspect we will be in a cycle of struggling to keep a few players due to the new $ value and go home factor will be tested with big $
That’s the cycles of the AFL and being in Sydney
gWS are a living example"be tough, only when it gets tough"

All the talk on SEN today was the Tassie Club launch. They will get a big bunch of draft picks in a few years, so hopefully we have some handy Academy boys around then to soften the blow for us.Comment
-
But AJ was a pick #58 - so not realy relevant to discussions of top end pick failures.Comment
-
It they went for a Key Position it would soften it but its a huge miss, in the Top 10, he will be a multiple All Australian Midfielder. They all deserve the backlash that comes with that as well as the plaudits for the other picks.Comment

Agreed my esteemed Ghost. With all the technical information available and thorough analysis practically from the time they left their nappies, selecting young players is a mixture of skill, gut feel and luck. How else can we explain the phenomenal success of players like Goodsey, taken so late? Every club has similar successes and also many strike-outs: it’s just the nature of the beast. KB and his team have been better than average as shown by our consistency in making finals- but certainly not without their fair share of “mistakes”. I believe we now have a team that can challenge for the flag, barring further significant injuries, and our recruiters have done an excellent job and we now have a pretty well balanced squad.we need our youngsters to keep improving and play exciting, attacking football. If we keep going as in our first 2 games we as supporters couldn’t be happier! Go Bloods![emoji7]

Serong was a regular in the Sydney rooms the year he got drafted not just a supporter from afar. They knew him in and out and he would have been less of a flight risk.

So being in the rooms is a factor in recruitment? So any kid with draftable ability should get in there to give themselves a leg up. Don’t get me wrong, in hindsight we should have picked Serong but his presence in the rooms was irrelevant. Can you imagine the uproar that would occur on this forum if Stephens had been the Swans supporter and not Serong. KB would have been emasculated for taking club affection into account.
Interstate club with a Victorian top rated kid that supported us, overlooked for another kid rated similar.
Was a no brainerComment
