The Swans capacity for self-immolation is the probably the greatest in the league.

Are you decrying that habit or displaying it's symptoms?

However, last time I checked it was Crocodiles not Swans that ate their own young ~ although from these boards I'm beginning to wonder.

Do you think when St Kilda doesn't win the flag the good folk at Morabbin will be saying the same thing about Riewoldt, Kosi, Del Santo, et al?

      Probably.

It appears to me that some FANS have fallen back to their old mentality. You could get cryogenically frozen only to be woken in the last week in September and miss all the crappy regular season, and boring stuff like prelim finals. If you awake and the Swans aren't in the GF, you could simply revert to your slumber and set the alarm for the following year.

You must be older than the rest of us. I can't remember how the 1934 H&A season went but I bet you're right and the bloody Bloods dropped their standards. I'd like to check by my grandfather's dead.

            He has a point.

In 1934, 1935 and 1936 we made the GF but lost it.

In 1937 we fell back to 9th then last in 1938 and 1939.

Made finals in 1942 and lost the GF again in 1945.

Did not make finals again until 1970. In the intervening 24 years our average position was 8th.

In 1971 dropped back to last. For the next 6 years our average finish was 11th.

We made finals again in 1997, lost again, slumped back again to average a 9th finish over the next 8 years.

During that period we won the 1982 night flag, thus giving some hope for the 1982 or 1983 seasons, but we finished 7th and 11th those years.

Made finals in 1987 and 1988 but crashed out, making only 7th for the next 2 years. Then finished bottom third of the table for the next 6 years.

Made the GF in 1996 and lost, failed to follow up in 1997 falling back to 6th and being smashed in finals.

Played better in 1998, but lost in finals again, and then struggled from 1999 to 2002.

I just knew you'd know that NMWBloods! I imagine you sitting in a swivel chair surrounded by leather AFL volumes, an abacus by the side of your computer and an in tray full of algorithms and statistical formulae.

Unfortunately administrative incompetence saw the team we were building dispersed throughout the VFL rather than winning the Swans a flag. (Danihers, Morwoods, Teasedale etc.etc.)

The bandaid years, sell off young talents and draft choices in order to purchase hacks. administrative incompetence!

The administrative incompetence that resulted in the 87 team being slagged off then sold off probably broke the teams cohesion.

Having Pratt and Nash walk out, was a defining moment for Swans administration.

Lets face it a pattern emerges, I think our failure to win a flag isn't usually the result of tolerating mediocity, more often we self destruct either through intemperate brain farts or in pusuit of ephemeral short term gain.

One good season and we've forgotten that Roos said we needed 5 years to build a Brisbane.

Just another Swans intemperate brain fart.

John Stockton was taken at 16 in that draft!

I suppose though that it's always something. Would be nice if all parts of the Swans got their act together at the same time for a number of years!!

And Longley was, easily the worst no 1 draft pick in the NBA's recent history.

How that 87/88 side never won a final I'll never know.
Some parallels there to the Port side of the last couple of years.

Yes the whole club (top to bottom) should be made accountable for those failures not just the Football staff, bit hard to do that in our case though.

From Fosdike to the NBA............ only on RWO!!!!!!

Certainly in '86 we should have won at least 1 final - the horror of watching Bernie Quinlan get a ball to turn square on a sodden MCG is something that will never leave me.

Back to Fosdike - he has been OK - nothing great this year - but I think he still can improve and is at least in our best 22 at the moment.

I think if and when Schaubs comes back and has a few weeks to get back into things then the whole side will straighten up and play better.

One thing: we probably won't win the flag this year - but 12 or 13 teams are in that boat. We need our 10-50 game players to improve. If we lose this week it may be time to throw in say, Thewlis or Dempster to see what they are made of.

                                The Age's Profile of Fosdike.

"Averaged 16 disposals a game in 2003. Very good skills and a hard runner. Capable of winning plenty of the ball."

I think the key word is CAPABLE.
