Was nervous about the pursuit of Charlie given the cost but in the wash up I'm comfortable.

Overall through trade we've added Charlie, Rosas and Serong, lost Will, Ollie & Buller.

On picks - 2025 lost what would have been pick 14 but got enough picks back to cover the three best academy prospects. 2026 lost a likely late teens pick. 2027 lost what will probably be a late 20's pick. I think we've done ok.

We've now got 35 on the main list so three vacancies. If we want to activate pick 63 we'll need to move a player to the rookie list, like Rampe, Harry or Adams

Sydney's draft picks: 31 (429 points), 32 (405 points), 42 (202 points), 63 (no points). Total 1036.

King 23 (653 points), Kyle 35 (338 points), Carmichael 37 (297 points). Total 1288 points. With 10% discount, that's 1159.2 points.

Superficially, it appears Sydney is 123.2 points short. However, Brisbane and Gold Coast will be using up so many picks recruiting from their Academies that this hypothetical deficit would be wiped out before the draft reaches pick 10. Indeed, so many picks could be removed that pick 63 could end up bearing points.

Top 10 prospects tied to Academies, Twomey's rankings:
2 Zeke Uwland (Gold Coast).
4 Dylan Patterson (Gold Coast).
5 Daniel Annable (Brisbane Lions).

Gold Coast's picks: 15, 18, 24, 28, 29, 36, 52
Brisbane Lions' picks: 17, 23, 44, 51, 59

I expect both teams will swap out their later first-round picks for more points before the draft. Brisbane and Gold Coast will use up about 10 to 12 picks between them to draft these three players. I won't run the numbers, but those four picks in the 20s will probably all get used to match bids. If so, pick 31 would become pick 27 (533 points). The improvement in value for that pick alone (104 points) would almost wipe out the deficit. Improvement in the values of the other picks will take care of the rest.

This is a good analysis, and throw in Carlton using some picks on Dean (and possibly Essendon using their picks in the 20s on some NGA players), and we'll be more than fine given the expected ranges of our academy kids.

One thing I would really like to see is a great leap in player development - we can't have drafted that many average players over the past few years that only a few of them get games. A very comprehensive development plan and a competent reserves team would be a huge step forward.

Cunow at the same age: 58 games, 77 goals - 1.33 goals/game

In his next year Charlie played 4 games and scored 2 goals, before exploding in his 25th, 26th and 27th years to earn two Coleman medals.

James Rowbottom (need a dynamic Midfielder in his place) - Callum Mills / James Rowbottom / James Jordon / Angus Sheldrick - all four are in the same mould and we can do with 2 or 3. We need someone who can either be elite at the inside game or above average at the inside game but also can get outside and has good kicking skills and speed. Not easy to find.
Harry Cunningham has another 2 years in him at the most.
Not sure about Malcolm Rosas Jnr with regards to defensive efforts and pressure. Hopefully between him, Caiden Cleary and Jesse Datoli we find one that can really pressure at elite level.

But do u thik we should use one of our picks on a young up aand coming key defender like a Blake Tehrdgold before we go to the academy players. He seems to have a fine profile and too have an additional key defender even if it takes 12 mths for him to mature and learning of Malceski would be great.

I have no idea how the picks are likely to be used, or even how many picks we can take to the draft. I'm guessing three or four, with some veteran players moving to the increasingly-misnamed rookie list like Lloyd.

I think we may end up taking a defender at some point, possibly with a later pick. Out of the nine players who have left Sydney so far in this offseason, four were defenders: Fox, Leidler, Mitchell, Paton. Francis was a key forward who could play in defence if needed. All five were delisted.

Whether we would draft a key defender remains to be seen. We currently have six or so on the list: Andrew, Edwards, Snell, Hamling, McCartin and Melican. The first three have hardly played a senior game between them.

If I was to make a guess, Sydney could take four picks to the draft, recruit three Academy prospects when they are bid on (King, Kyle, Chamberlin), and pick up some kind of defender if Sydney ends up on the clock with a live pick. Maybe not a key defender though; we have Andrew and Snell who are as yet untried at senior level.

The key here is when Sydney would be on the clock with a live pick. It is unlikely to be early due to bid matching. If Sydney is on the clock before our (current) pick 42, I will be surprised.

There's also the rookie draft. Most of the players that Sydney delisted were on the rookie list. If there's going to be some defenders drafted, that's when they are more likely to be recruited. That's when Rampe and Cunningham were recruited.

I'm not very good at assessing list needs though, so don't take my comments here too seriously. I'm mostly just guessing here.

I didn't feel the need to consider in depth any recruit outside the Brisbane and Gold Coast Academies, as it was clear that so much early bid matching would be taking place with just these two clubs that a lot of picks would be leaving the draft and so elevating the value of Sydney's draft picks.

If the other players are added, it only enhances the value of Sydney's middling picks further.

Dean (Carlton father-son) is also a top-10 prospect, but it is not clear to me how Carlton will be using their picks. Carlton have picks 9 and 11, but I think it is very likely that one or both of these picks will get traded before draft night.

The other four players on this list - including King - are close together in rankings, and IMO could be bid on in any order.

Not included on this top-30 list is Harry Kyle of the Sydney Swans Academy. Some are saying he will be a draft bolter, and he topped one of the testing categories at the Combine. I wouldn't be surprised if he was bid on before King.

Happiness/unhappiness is a relative thing. I wandered onto twitter after the trade period to check in on our old mate The Bloods and his moniker there. Boy, is that an adventure. Every post is this and that Rowie. He's variously the worst player to ever don the red and white, utterly selfish, "hated" (his word, not mine) by his teammates, a cigarette smoker (I think), and there's some strange thing I couldn't follow involving him apparently tormenting children with a no show at a sports club. All that, and he spent four weeks confidently forecasting it was a done deal that he was off to the Gold Coast.

It all makes his old posts on here seem sane and rational.

Interesting to hear the reason the Curnow deal got done only a few mins before the deadline, was the haggling over our 2027 1st rounder. We blinked first in the end. Maybe we haggled to receive those suite of picks in return to close the deal? Wonder what the reaction would 've had it not got done?

Curnow's manager Robbie D'Orazio told AFL Trade Radio it was an intense final few minutes before the deal got over the line, with that 2027 pick the “sticking point”.
