How can we even discuss trading Bolton, Davis, Ablett or just about any other name that has been thrown around in this forum??? How soon we forget...

Aren't we the team that's built on a spirit of honesty, hard work and discipline??? Isn't that what seperates us from all of those other teams???

I'll gladly take a one point loss in a GF to keep that ethos in the team that I support...

Other teams like the wet toasters will come and go.. rise and fall... but the Swans shall always be united... win or lose....

a champion team will always beat a team of champions...

You can keep the likes of arrogant @@@@@s like cousins... give me fumbling LRT, a towelled up Jolly, an off game playing Barry Hall and set shot missing Bolton any day of the week....

A bit of deep throat, cool! but back to the topic at hand lol.

None of those players will be traded, but i admit that Ablett wouldn't be missed too much in terms of impact. He's a booming kick but i can't see him improving alot in the future, he's a replacable player, Davis on the other hand, is not. Let's not forget this boy wanted to be in Sydney, and his match winning ability has been displayed on numerous occasions, hopefully 2007 will be his season so he can finally get all those critics off his back

I think Swans incl Everitt has a greater chance of winning another flag in 2007 or 2008 than Swans incl Bolton, so with the sweetener of a slightly better draft option I think it would be a good trade. As I've said though, it's not going to happen.

EXACTLY the point...... We start trading players that are genuine team players for the stats hogs like Cousins, Buckley, Akermanis, Mooney, Cornes, Robertson, etc... Where are we then??? Standing there with a few star players, no team and no chance of winning the flag again....

Any one of them can be traded ... bottom line is someone has to go. With Willo & Chambers gone, I believe we still have to delist one more player. (That belief I think is a stab in the dark, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, or tell me that I'm right).

I'll give my guess as to the names of the players that Sydney might actually trade.

How often does an automatic-first-22-selection player get traded unless he specifically indicates he wants to leave (or there are off-field interpersonal or other issues a la Carey and arguably Lockett/BBBH)?

Very rarely. Go back through the history of trading and you'll see that trades for really good players were generally driven by the players themselves. The abandoned club just tries to get the best compensation it can, out of the situation. It might want an 'automatic first-22-selection' player from another club, but-- unless the player being traded is a genius and/or the second club is in a poor bargaining position-- it's not necessarily likely to get one.

The last automatic-selection players that Sydney traded out of the club, so far as I can recall, were Greg Stafford and Ryan Fitzgerald both at the end of 2001. I don't know if Staff wanted to go, but his trade was part of getting BBBH which was a once-in-a-decade opportunity. Fryzie was so permanently injured that he might as well not have been an automatic selection. (Scott Stevens was traded later, but he certainly wouldn't be an automatic selection in any side I picked.) Whereas Sydney have traded a lot of fringe players, e.g. Powell, Saddo, Troy Cook, Fixter.

Four mature players arrived at the club through trading at the end of 2004 and 2005: all were traded for draft picks. None for players.

So, presuming that no-one who played in the 2006 GF wants to walk out on the Swans-- and the only one seriously named by the rumour mill in this respect was Amon Buchanan, a rumour that's been quashed by the man himself if we believe Go Swannies-- we're left with the rest.

Paul Bevan and Jared Crouch are players who Sydney would have liked to see in its final 22 come GF day if circumstances had allowed it (Crouch if he was fit, Bevan if there had been a slot), and so they both fit into the first-22-selection category.

Then you cut out players who (in the club's view) haven't yet got over the development curve (i.e. their full potential has not yet been seen), are also very likely to be untradeable because it's likely to be a poor-value trade: the club cops the development cost and time, but if Sydney believes the player has (or may have) what it takes, the other club gets the productive playing years. I would put into this category Earl Shaw, Tim Schmidt, Jarred Moore (although he might be tradeable b/c we have a number of his type), Simon Phillips (is it even legal to trade promoted rookies?), Heath Grundy and the 3 new draftees from 2005.

Bearing that in mind, players who Sydney might actually be looking at trading are:
1. Josh Willoughby
2. Andrew Ericksen
3. Luke Vogels
4. David Spriggs.

They are varying ages and have been here varying times, but they are arguably far enough into the development curve that the club can fairly accurately predict how good their best footy will be. All of them have some value, although how much is of course debatable.

The only player I'd put in the final category of 'over the development curve, but no trade value; to be delisted' is Matt Davis. And of course there's a special category for Paul Chambers.

They're all viable trade options ... if you wanna get a big name like Spida.

Admittedly, Spida's an old man (and that's where my only reservation comes in), but he's a HUGE name and a HUGE player. He wanted out of the hawks last year, they wouldn't let him go, so he played a very mediocre season with them, knowing it would be his last (maybe in an effort to hold his body together, maybe in an effort to make it easier to release him at season's end... who knows?).

The whole AFL world knows that Spida wants to play here, and has wanted to play here for some time. Roosey wants to do the right thing by the hawks, knowing he is "potentially" (Spida's not here yet) taking a superstar. Roosey has to pay back in kind (or as close to kind as he can get). You have to remember he's taking THEIR #1 ruckman.

Hence, my choices above.
Who else would you choose?

Not likley to be trading any of those players such as willoughby and ericksen and vogels as all have played senior football in some stage of their careers except Willoughby and Ericksen and I believe that Willoughby will play senior football soon hopefully next year with schmidt

as for trading matt davis for spida that is not going to happen

Your argument is very contradictary. Effectively you are suggesting we give them Nick Davis as a goodwill gesture??

We'll get 2 years out of Spida... Jolly, Davo and Ablett all have 6-7 years plus to go.

I would offer 3rd round draft pick - nothing else.

IMO, Roosey would be a fool to give ANYBODY for him. He should let him sit through Round 1, wait for the hawks to put him on the scrap heap, then the swans can pick him up at bargain basement prices.

If he does come though at Round 1 ... face it ... Hawks are gunna want SOMEONE. A "name" player, albeit not a very good one, but a "name" player nonetheless ... as opposed to an anonomous (sp?) #3 draft pick.

Ah speculation. Where would we be without it?
