If you wish to read back, I only complained about ads on foxtel in that you are paying to watch the ads that get shown on FTA anyway. I do watch a bit of foxtel (all my siblings have it), and find this most annoying.

Tell me, since they started advertising on foxtel (after the initial three month no ads), did they reduce the cost of the premium you paid to watch? I would think that they should have, seeings big business was paying them to advertise. The way I see it, IN MY MOST HUMBLEST OF OPINION not only are they getting revenue from the advertisers, they also get revenue from the people who are forced to watch the ads. That's double dipping. If you're ok with that ... keep paying your premium. It's no skin off my nose.

I don't like to feed the fat cats. I don't like to pay interest on my credit card either, for the same reason. Get over it.

Yes ... ads are crap, but they do allow you to get up and have a wee break. When I watch FTA TV, I do so with the remote in my hand so that I can mute the ads. I'm sure if I had fox, I'd be doing the same.
In my humble opinion your views on Foxtel are crap. Why would you care if they double dip a little so as to maintain the service?

Exactly as you say, a few ads are good - they have a short ad break every 15 minutes on most Foxtel programmes. It's shorter than on FTA but gives you enough time to pop out of the room but is not long enough to be annoying if you sit through it.

The ads for football, which is what started this discussion, are only on at quarter breaks, hence you get a much better view of the game.

You constantly bag Foxtel and I find that frustrating because the comments are so ill-informed. The issue on ads I've discussed above. Yes, there are a number of re-runs but most of those aren't on FTA. Plus there are a huge number of shows that are not shown on FTA.

The Foxtel ad breaks are shorter and further apart than FTA and while Foxtel does tend to rerun shows until you want to smash your television, a lot of the shows aren't available on FTA. I wouldn't be without Foxtel and only make the switch to FTA for really important things like Survivor or footy.

So are you saying it is better for only 25% of the population to be able to see it live than for 100% of the population that could see it delayed on FTA? Because that's what it looks like you are saying, and that would be a backward step.
I can't see how broadcasting a game at 1am will win any new fans. Is that not a backward step, rather than all matches being shown live which I would regard as a forward step??

If people don't have Foxtel I am sure they can walk down to their local to catch the game there.

I actually got into footy watching the late night broadcast. Used to flick between that and rage after a night out. Before that I labelled it aerial ping pong, etc, etc.

Not a way to win over the masses I admit, but if you have to decide you want to pay for something you dont like before you get a chance to watch it, probably just as likely to succeed.

Is your local the swans club? They had the nerve to switch off the afl for the league when I was there last year!

How can it be a forward step if 75-80% of people can't watch it at home?

Sydney does have the advantage that at least the local teams games will be shown on FTA every week no matter which way the broadcasting goes. Those of us interstate don't have that luxury, although Annie has promised to tape them and send them to me.

Have movie theatres dropped their prices, or the cost of Swans tickets been reduced given both subject their paying audiences to advertising?

People here are defending Foxtel against your ill-informed attacks because they don't regard it as a "load of crap"... Personally I enjoy the uninterupted sport, which includes AFL, NRL (which had 3 or 4 live matches a week in 2006 compared to FTA's zero) and English Premier League. As a cricket fan I also enjoy watching the various international matches not involving Australia that are shown. Channel 9 showed the Footy Show at 1am in Sydney, whereas Foxtel screened White Line fever, On the Couch etc daily and in prime time which kept Sydney viewers informed.

FTA's diabolical treatment of programs such as West Wing, the Sopranos, and numerous sporting events is hardly worth defending. It's also worth noting that shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Sex in the City are products of US cable TV and in Curb's case is well supported by Foxtel.

I'd rather pay for TV and get less ads than the extraordinary amount on FTA these days. The re-runs you refer to are restricted to 2 or 3 channels - another case of you being ill-informed.

And by the way, advertisers do not keep FTA free, Federal Government legislation does.

I think foxtel is crap, you don't. Let's agree to disagree, eh?

If you can't find something to watch on six commercial FTA television stations ... I say get a life - go outside and sit in the sun.
