Just to throw another side of the argument into the mix

Making Goodesy captain could be the worse thing for him...it could actually work to stifle his natural skills.

He has more free rein than other players...can go where he wants to go etc. This doesnt naturally sit right with leading by example because if everybody followed suit it would be chaos.

Don't agree with you in the sense that players don't have to copy the role of their captain to follow their lead.

But I do agree with you in the sense that Goodes' confidence seems a lot more fragile than Kirk's. And his poor form at the start of both post-Brownlow years (he was ordinary in 2004 even before his knee injuries set in) suggest that he might have been trying too hard to live up to his previous season rather than just doing the role he was given.

Actually, making sure the guy isn't choking on his tongue is the first thing you do, then worry about neck injuries. So Goodesy did the right thing in this instance.

Yes, but check the tongue without lifting the head off the ground is the best idea!

I doubt he could slot a goal on the run from outside 50m if the game was in the balance.

He couldn't slot one from inside the 50m in the final quarter of an Elimination Final. You know, just as an example.

Goodes for Captain 2008

It's funny, but I thought Goodes should have been made captain originally - after Maxfield left - obviously his coaches or team-mates didn't think so, or he would have gotten the job.

The situation is different now and the current setup has to change. Hall is not captain material. He spends too much time arguing with umpires and then giving away pointless free kicks to be respected.

Kirk is great and could mount a case for being given the job on his own. However, while Kirk sacrifices his game for others, who sacrifices their game for Kirk? No one does really and even if they do his style of play (lacks pace and penetration with his kicking) does not lend itself to a greater team reward if they do.

Leo Barry is good - sets up play from defence and can be inspirational - but the team don't sacrifice themselves for him either (to our detriment). Plus he is basically stuck at one end of the ground and cannot influence the efforts of others in the midfield and forward line.

Someone mentioned earlier that captains grow in their position and that is exactly why Goodes should get the job. His individual efforts inspire currently, but they don't have the aura of a "captain's inspiration" because he does not have the title (something special lends itself to a player with the title - but it rarely goes three ways).

Goodes can go into defence and take the saving mark, win the ball from the centre and execute brilliance up forward - he is anywhere you need a captain to be. Players need to sacrifice their game for stars like Goodes (although he could afford to do more team oriented things himself - which I think he would with the added expectation of the captain's role) and the team is rewarded if they do.

Plus I would rather hear Goodes (as Captain) make an inspirational speech about the tireless efforts of the warrior Kirk - as a reason why the team should lift - than have Kirk ask time and again for his teammates to lift to his own standards.

To settle this once and for all, changes for 2008:

OUT Three captains
IN Captain - Brett Kirk; Vice Captain - Adam Goodes

(Or have them both as co-captains, either way I don't care. They've been the only 2 players this year to consistently provide the sort of on-field leadership that's needed IMO).
