AFL legend Ian Stewart says Sydney's decision to consider trading Jude Bolton is a sad indictment on the modern game.

Footnote: While Bolton was "available" in the right circumstances, Sydney said it wanted him to stay and he remained a Swan at the end of trade week.

I'm glad the Stewie was a footballer not a cricketer...

Stewart suggested a maximum of 40 rotations per team per game, a maximum of 10 per quarter. He said unrestricted use of the bench also was unfair in its impact on the game's great ball-winners.

"I don't think it's fair that Chris Judd has two and three fresh opponents during every game. It's like bringing in a new fast bowler every five overs in a Test match," he said.

Um, I thought that's why fast bowlers rested, so they could be fresh, just like footballers on the interchange bench.

Not sure I understand your criticism of his point here (fast bowlers normally rest for much longer than 5 overs) - I think that he is spot on - the balance between footballer and athlete is out of whack in the AFL.

The point of the interchange bench being a place to rest is relatively new for the AFL - it was a place for poor performance or injury.

The logic behind the rules committee idea of "you must speed the game up in order to slow it down" backfired big time. Still not sure if the restrictions of the bench would work though - but still worth a try.

On the flip side his argument was about Jude Bolton and he used Chris Judd as an example to back up his case (not sure if we are comparing apples with apples here).

I'm guessing GoSwannies criticism is of the dumb ass analogy he used.

He thinks it is unfair to keep bringing fresh players off the bench to run with the likes of Judd. He then uses the analogy of changing fast bowlers every 5 overs to keep them fresh, as if it is unfair on the batsmen. WTF.

No. But I think the point being made was that there is no bench in cricket for new bowlers to keep coming off and replace the tired ones (like in the AFL). They normally stay on the field and then require much more rest (on the ground) once they have finished their spell.

The problems in this regard really started when the AFL expanded the bench from 2 to 4. They probably should go back to a standard 2 man bench for rotations with another 2 being available only for injuries.

they made sure Bolton fronted up next year with an increase in financial terms to ensure he did not take his chances in the pre-season draft.

Perhaps that's the real reason Roos offered him as trade bait... to get him a pay rise.

Quite unbelievable that you get rewarded for such a bad season with more money.

I (and I suspect many others) thought that B1 was on the block because the only way forward for him was downhill. It seems that Roos' stategy was to try and get a first rounder for him and maybe on trade for somebody younger and faster. Failing that sign him up for another two. I guess the problem was that none of the other clubs reckoned Jude was worth that, and I must admit I agree. Logical, if ruthless plan, but one year late in the execution.

Anyway, good luck to Jude. Will now be a Swan for his whole career.

The man has never been dropped, so the club, which makes these decisions, believes he is worth another 2 years. All contracts are performance based in one way or another..extra for final apps extra for brownlow votes , extra for b'nf votes etc. They are not based on the number of possessions etc.
