Even if Roos was pushing for a loss in those dying minutes, what player or club official is going to admit it? It's a massive waste of time.

I would be more worried about the position they put clubs into towards the end of the season to get priority picks if I was the AFL.

Firstly, like most others, I think the pre-season comp is a waste of time. If the AFL want to wring another 4 weeks worth of gate takings out of the public, extend the season. If it needs a place to experiment with rules, the rules are probably crap. I have no interest in it, do not watch it, and probably would not even watch it if Sydney made the final.

Secondly, I think it is most likely that Roos told McVeigh to go forward and then, tongue in cheek, said something along the lines of "and don't try to kick a goal" - no doubt taking the piss. I do not think that Roos would decide to tank in the last few minutes. If they planned to lose the game it would be a game plan that all (or most senior players at least) would know well before the game started.

Thirdly, it was a dumb thing to say, even if he did not think anyone would hear. It is one of those things that is clearly easy to do (for the naive or the arrogant - take your pick) but words out of context often look bad and Roos does not want to put himself in a position where he or the club could have their integrity called into question.

Fourthy, if there ever is a betting scandal in AFL, it will be in this comp. How easy would it have been for a few Sydney boys to get their mates to bet a few thousand each on a Swans loss and then throw it. Becuase no one cares about the result it is ripe for a fixing scandal.

And finally, it is a dumb comp. Oh, and Roos' "the AFL is out to get me" is a little pathetic, but I wont go there.

Don't you have to be leading a game to throw it or tank it? I don't think we lead all day, therefore this whole ordeal is pathetic. It wasn't our game to lose as we were not winning.

No. You just have to avoid winning. Now, it may have been that we never had a chance to throw the game, if we were never in a goal-scoring position (this is assuming that Roos DID throw the game, which is iffy, and certainly tough to prove if true), in which case we didn't throw the game, but still, supposedly, the intent was there, and that's what's important. You still charge somebody for attempted murder. The same principle would apply here.

And we were winning at some stages of the game. Quite often, in fact.

Just because they play/have played for us doesn't mean everyone has to like them.

The 'issue' referred to in that article is Roos' remarks about the AFL having some sort of bad blood with him. It say's nothing about whether action or not will be taken re: the tanking allegations.

ROKL, I agree with everything you have said.

Like all pre-season games, I thought it was quite forgettable, with some players showing glimpses of potential and far too many skill errors which is understandable for the first game of the year. You certainly couldn't fault the endeavour of the players.

I think Roos probably did say what he's alleged to have said, but of course didn't mean it. For all the flaws of the pre-season cup, why would you proactively seek to deny a very young team playing a rare senior game a win in the red and white?

Finally, Roos has form on this. If the AFL doesn't think Roos was joking, they should be made to sit through every press conference he has ever given. Roos deals in sarcasm whether it be the preseason or after a losing grand final. Its his first instinct to always give a joke response. He thinks he's pretty clever, some find it refreshing but I find it @@@@ing annoying. What may have seemed clever and witty at the time and turned out to be a fairly serious issue for the club.
