What you call an uncontested possession is in fact making good position and running into an advantageous position. Uncontested possessions = good off ball positioning.

I seem to recall a certain poster using the ratio of uncontested to contested possessions to criticize another player, uncontested possessions apparently showing that player wasn't hard at it.

As the great Warren Ryan said "Statistics don't play and win games. Players do." I'm already on a yellow card for mentioning a former Bloods first grader who will be playing in the VFL next season but there is a huuuuuge difference between a player who makes position through hard work off the ball and quarterbacks out of defense and a player who can't/won't win a contested possession because he refuses to put his head over the ball, tackle and have a red hot go (this player shall remain nameless due to my current good behaviour bond and suspended sentence).
