LA - i too rate Bird over Kennedy........... 2010 will be a fascinating debate though as there is so much potential........

Bird is a much more natural footballer in the skill dept but he is a much more flexible player in a variety of positions vs Josh.

I feel josh has come to the Swans not so much for 2010 unless we have injuries but more for overall depth into the future.

strong in and under midfielders at 22yrs of age are not always easy to get to your club at the right price and this could be Kirks last year and or lesser minutes in 2011. But Josh has a alot of work to do in the skills dept..........his tenacity and ability to play in the middle of the ball ups etc is not questioned as this is his strength winning and covering up the ball.

Craig Bird is a good kid and Im glad he is a Swan. Has heaps to offer and it right in the mix when it comes to starting. Couldnt agree any more.

Whilst its great getting plenty of it with the limited time he gets on the park, its what is happening the other way that is common knowledge to oppposition players and coaches. His ACCOUNTABILITY is his weakness.

He kicked 2 great goals against the Roos in the final quarter, when we really needed them. We need more of that from Birdy is what Im eluding to.
He is still young and learning and hopefully be in the best 22, I though rekon
we cant carry Kirk, Jude Bolton and a Craig Bird all in a best 22 in our midfield.
Its just to slow and we get exposed on the big grounds on regular occasions.
Id take Jude and Kirky still before Craig Bird, rekon Roosy and the coaches do
Also Sydney,will always play their recruits.
They always have and McGlynn will be a certain starter and what Ive seen of Josh Kennedy , he is on level par with Bird easily.

driving along the foreshore and who do i see training his butt off by himself....Mark Seaby....and boy does he look fit...
That to me showed how dedicated he his to become a permanent player for us..
Here are other players, some of whom who aren't even at the eagles any more, enjoying the new year, as players should, and here is Seaby working his butt off...

FYI, I agree speed is a weakness for Bird, but he he is fit for purpose, which is extracting the pill to outside players to run, link and deliver. By analogy, Rob Harvey never blessed with pace but he 'survived' becuase he was super quick between the ears and his vision and evasiveness allowed him to always be one step ahead of the rest. Bird will be like that.

I also reckon Dan Hanneberry would be no quicker than Bird.

i saw (tonight on Ten HD) the late 2009 season replay of the hawks vs bombers game - very spiteful affair.

I watched with keen interest JK and BM. Ben looked very versatile in tagging and the other half of the time HFF. He was dangerous in getting possessions but struggled to execute a couple of clear shots at Goal.

Ben looked handy in that game.

JK - he again appeared very shaky in the skill dept but tried hard and does some freakish things ie a clear from the ball up straight to a leading forward inside 50 and also made a strong lead in front of Lloyd and won the mark !

He may develop........its a stretch though for him to become dominant as his skills suck for a Senior player.

Filling in a grey day with left over Chrissy chocs and The Essence of the Game, featuring (wait for it), Dan Hannerbery as Shtar for Xavier College, and first gamer Josh Kennedy (his undressed and very impressive upper bod for a boy) and his Mum. Its a choice bit of viewing for any of you who haven't seen it yet.

Loved the grab about Seaby. He must have been reading up on NicMal's training regime. The boys must be really competing for spots this year. Yay. Cannot wait. (are we there yet?).

This is quite an exciting excercise this year with so much personnel change, and talent in the ressies and draftees putting real pressure on the seniors.

So here's my go at it:

F: Bradshaw, White, Vez
HF: Malceski, Goodes, Jack
M: Jude, Rok, Tige
HB: Shaw, Bolton, Mattner
B: Ted, LRT, Bevan
R: Seaby, Kirk, McVeigh

Int: Mumford, Bird, Kennedy, Grundy

Emg: Playfair, McGlynn, Smith

Vez gets a go ahead of McGlyn, based on the assumption that he's fully recoverd from his op & training well. McGlyn will get game time tho because (as has been mentioned in this thread) the recruits always get a run. But hot on both their heels is Trent Dennis-Lane who, if he brings his WAFL game to the AFL, would be my starting small forward.

I've got Mal at HF as the current HB line is working too well to break up, which is also why Tige starts on the wing. But I also believe Mal's defensive & kicking skills would be a real asset in that part of the ground. And he's training with Rhyce

Unfortunately for Hannebery & Meredith the recruitment of Kennedy and the return of Tige forces them out of my team and into the 2's. But they'd be straight in after the first injuries/form drop in the midfield. Then Jetta, who I'm very keen to see in the seniors.

The trend in this thread is to promote Smith & drop Bevan, but I don't think we've seen enough of Smith to make that call. Bevan is stronger, more experienced, fully commmitted and will (fingers crossed) bounce back this year. Ditto for Richards -- if Ted's fully over his injury he's a definite starter ahead of Grundy.

To have Bevan right in front of the opposition goal is risky to say the least. The brave saves and clearances will be matched by stuff ups that costs us goals.To have "turn over Teddy" and LRT with him on the last line of defence is IMO suicidal.Grundy must start and Bevan's only chance is the forwards.Teddy because of his size and versatility is a bench starter.


While I fully support being competitive with your best team on the field,the philosophy of the swans is to rebuild with recruits and youngsters.
Where is Hanneberry? Why is Kennedy,a fringe player at Hawthorn better than Meredith, Smith, ? Trent D-L is EXACTLY the player we have been missing since the departure of Davis and now MOL's abscence.He should start
in the 22.McGlynn and Jack are natural crumbers and to have them both in the team might be too much.

I guess its great there are so many options that we could have 5 or 6 changes and still have a great team

Fabulous that we've got so many choices for most spots, there will be unlucky players for sure.

NAB Cup now becomes vital for each player to cement a claim for round 1.

If TDL continues to show well in preseason, he's a must starter, just the player we haven't had since Davis imploded.

I do like the idea of Jack as a crumbing forward.

Jack starts on the bench along with McGlynn simply because they are likely to be part of the midfield rotations.

What I liked about Hannebery was that last year he was up with the best in pre season, and on what could only be termed as a limited preparation, was still going strong at the end of his first game at The Dome. On that alone with another solid preseason I would expect him to go to another level quickly.

If Jetta and Dennis-Lane show up in the NAB Cup dont be surprised if they line up in round 1. Jetta coming off the wing and running forward as per his tape, could be something special.

I for one can't wait to see Johnston string some games together and if Currie comes up as well, then there is going to be heaps of pressure for spots.

I like the defensive springboard and the potentially explosive and pacy centre line.
