Mitchell watch

If you disregard this year he's played 20+ games in 4 of his past 5 seasons, which hardly backs up your argument.
He's obviously not going to play this year now, but he 100% improves our team if he's in. He's superior to Xavier forward and has the versatility to play wing or key defence.

Back on topic, that article in the Herald Sun didn't fill me with confidence as the headline didn't match the content.
I hope we retain Tom, but there was nothing specific in that article that suggested he was definitely stayingComment

Why would we want to trade Mitchell when we are in the middle of our premiership window and there's no guarantee that pick 6 will ever be as good as Mitchell?
Whilst you're thinking laterally in terms of list management, there's a few flaws with your strategy, namely:
1. Hiscox and McGlynn have no trade value whatsoever whilst Towers would be lucky to be worth a late 3rd/4th rounder.
2. Richmond and Carlton wouldn't have the cap or list space for multiple players even if they wanted them (and they probably wouldn't)
3. It's not Supercoach, these guys are real people with real lives, packing them up and moving them to a new city/club is not as simple as pressing a trade button
I agree that Hiscox and McGlynn have little or no trade value and were just throw ins. Towers, on the other hand, is a decent player and could be a very good player if he could improve his tackling and decision making. I think he would be a walk up starter at either club.
These are tough list management issues. If there were no constraints I would love to keep both Mitchell and Towers. But the fact is that we do have a salary cap and some quality players that need to get their opportunities or they will be the ones out the door. So it really becomes a matter of timing and trying to get the most value from players while improving the list along the way.Comment

I think this opinion is now way out of date. I noticed that in the swans rampaging third quarter on Saturday night, Towers was in the centre bounce with some of the A team. Guys his size and speed with his versatility don't grow on trees. Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

I'm surprised some people want to give up on Reid. His games played for 2011 to 2015 were as follows ;
2011 - 23
2012 - 22
2013 - 10
2014 - 20
2015 - 22
2015 was statistically his best year. Averaged around 14 disposals. Averaged 6 marks a game, kicked 16 goals and
had a useful 52 hitouts as a fill-in ruckman from time to time.
Outside of this year and 2013, he hasn't missed many games at all.
I like him. And he has a cool dog.Comment

And a cool cat - literally. Sam had a video clip on Instagram some time ago of his cat falling into his swimming pool! It scrambled out and fled into the house in a very bedraggled state.Comment

on a side note can we lay off reid It's like we think a decent marking KPP will just grow on a tree and we can just pick one off at pick 47.Comment

That keeps getting misquoted. What McLachlan actually said was "You can't have everything". By which he meant (in a poor attempt to justify the trade ban) the Swans couldn't have COLA for two more years (2015 & 2016) and be able to trade. Still obnoxious but not quite the same as is being remembered.
Also I see it is being reported today that the negotiations between the AFL and the AFLPA on the new collective agreement (which will set the TPP for future years) might not be concluded till after the finals. That must make it more difficult for the Swans to put any revised offer to Mitchell.
Healy tried to challenge him further and his tone was petulant and impatient. Unfortunately Healy's questioning was interrupted by Jason Dunstall, a miscalculation on his part rather than a de facto act of censorship, in my opinion.
I think if Healy had been able to press him further, the full ugliness of the AFL's motivation may have been exposed. Sadly, I think it was a missed opportunity to expose the AFL for what it is.
But I reiterate: his word was absolutely, categorically, definitely EVERYONE.Comment

No, the misquote is the "everything" one. I heard it myself, and remember it with absolute clarity. His words to Gerard Healy were "The Swans can't have everyone."

McLachlan: "The Swans mounted a compelling case over many meetings that it was our (AFL) rules under which they contracted these players. Under the phasing system they get more COLA next year and almost as much in 2016. We?re in an ongoing dialogue, this is not a reaction to anything else it?s an accommodation to keep the phasing out for a couple of years. If you want to keep all those players there has to be some constraints, you can?t have everything."

I have no doubt the "everyone" quote sums up the real reason - see below from Pridham - but McLachlan must have slipped up by using that wording in the interview you heard as I imagine he wasn't intending to reveal it so clearly!
Pridham: "The explanation for the trade ban was that the commission, and I quote: 'did not want to be embarrassed by the Swans, with another high-profile player signing following the signing in consecutive years of Kurt Tippett and Lance Franklin.'"

I agree he's been playing well (if he could just remove those brain fades from his game), but he still has negligible trade valueComment

Perhaps both parties are waiting on the outcome of this.
If the increase is over 8% it will make around $1m extra available next year, plus additional annual increases albeit small but would still help keeping the squad together.

Well, for all the dreamers out there - wake up. Hurley signed with the Bombers til 2022.
