I don't understand the actions of Port and North in trading for these players. Presumably GC is only pre-listing them once it knows another club is interested in them, rather than because it wants them on their own list. If Port really want Phillips, would they really need to use pick 35 to draft him? Surely a later pick would secure him (unless they know there are several clubs keen). Similarly with North and the player they have taken for a mid-30s pick.
Am I missing something here?Comment

He showed plenty of potentital but was frankly rubbish playing for us, so I'm hardly scared of Port picking him up. a 2nd round draft pick for him is a ridiculous trade however and reeks of desperation imo."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

The details are wrong, Port get Phillips and 35 (which was originally NM's pick which they traded to GC for Cam Richardson) in exchange for the Krakouer compo pick. Basically for nothing, similar to Freo getting Faulks and Mzungu for very little. It seems only NM had to pay a premium for Richardson, but that was reportedly because GC wanted to keep him.
GC are stockpiling compo picks (they now have the Krakouer, Fraser and one of Geelong's comp picks) for the futureComment

He was not playing rubbish for us, he was a consistently good reserves player. I believe it was off-field issues that caused his departure from the club, hopefully the years at Norwood have matured him and he comes back with a better attitude.Comment

I never thought he was much chop to be honest, but we all have our opinions. Will be interesting to see how he goes."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

The compensation pick can be used in the next 5 drafts. Most at the end of the first round except for Fraser who was end of third round.
In future years the compensation draft picks are of much higher value (after GWS) because they are at the end of Round 1.
So GC then went out to get all of those compensation draft picks back to be used in the future drafts. They got three picks for nothing. A mid first round, a late first round and second round draft pick.In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.Comment

Appreciate a link being posted whenever the AFL gets around to issuing the new National Draft order. Time now to cast our eyes over potential pick 21sLast edited by 707; 11 October 2010, 01:42 PM.Comment

Just stole this from another forum. The corresponding picks that GC have in the 05 draft:
2005 ND
1 - Marc Murphy
2 - Dale Thomas
3 - Xavier Ellis
7 - Patrick Ryder
9 - Mitch Clark
10 - Marcus Drum
11 - Shaun Higgins
13 - Shannon Hurn
Pretty scary in 5 years time!Comment

Those comp picks got bandied around like anything, but I wonder if by the 2012 draft their value starts to look better. "End of first round" only means pick 26 for the next two drafts before winding in to 19.
A nice blog showing the revised draft order and who traded what pick to whom can be found here.Last edited by laughingnome; 11 October 2010, 01:59 PM.10100111001 ;-)Comment
