Agree with that article....have been watching footy since 1995 and i'm still no sure - at all - if coaches really can influence more than 5% of output.

If they were that influential then teams would kick more accurately. Both sides last night kicked 18 points each. Some of the set shots were stunningly inaccurate. As has been said often set shots for goal is the one aspect of the game that hasn't improved.

I watched a game today in the Eastern Football league in Melbourne between Croydon and Norwood. Sadly Damian Cupido missed this last game of the season after he was rubbed out for 2 weeks. (kicked 10.1 last week) Now Damian didn't make it in the big time but since he was 10 years old his kicking has been something to behold. Long, high and accurate. As the old saying goes he kicks the bladder out of the thing. Croydon lost by 3 goals but had Damian played probably would have won by at least that margin simply through his accuracy.

Even though Damian didn't play what stood out for me was the incredible accuracy of the set shots from both sides. They kicked them from all angles and distances. I reckon the pressure of the league is relative to the standard so it could be argued that has little to do with it. I also found the passing to the chest of players was of a pretty high standard. So why is it so that AFL players have inferior stats? Maybe, just maybe, AFL clubs recruit players with good ball gathering skills etc, etc but put kicking at the lower end of the recruiting priorities.

The speed of the game and the pressure skills at AFL level are far far higher than any other level. AFL players are certainly fitter than their minor league counterparts but I bet they are still significantly more fatigued for most of the game.

I watched the Swans reserves this afternoon. Their footskills (other than in front of goal) were sublime - and that was from pretty much every single (Swans) player out there, top-ups included. But the pace of the game was such that Kennelly looked really quick, and even Moore looked like one of the nippier players out there. And the pressure from the opposition was ordinary, even for this level.

Understand what you are saying Liz, but what I noticed was the players were actually better kicks than many of our players. That is there were few floaters, few awkward styles and the drop punts spun correctly. Still reckon it is all relative to the standard when it comes to set shots. A set shot is a set shot even if it is in Dubai or Greenland. So you would expect AFL players to be the best in the business at set shots.

Now there is a bloke who brought nothing to the table. Our blokes were so unfit under him they were fatigued after the warm up in the rooms.

The players are stuffed by the time they shoot for goal. Big Tony and Dunstall for example led out about 30 metres and that was it. They weren't running to presses and having guys take off down the wing to chase.

Just 5% is enough to win or lose close games. But when we swapped Eade for Roosey our effort went up by more than 5% with the same players so a good coach does better than 5%IMO.

So why are we wasting $400k a year on Longmire when in your view a monkey could do the same job with minimial drop off in our on field results??
