Goodesy - One Week

So if Goodes went in head first it would have been stupidity because he was putting himself in danger, so if he keeps his feet then sections of the media would have questioned his commitment, if he went in studs first then he should have been reported. The fact is that there is no other option for what he did. This is crazy. The problem now is that if he appeals and gets off then the whole of the media will be squealing 'protected species' again. He is on a hiding to nothing.
I will get off my pulpit now.Comment

Saw that again last night. He slid in feet first and caught the player in the shin. This time he slid on his knees and made minimal contact. If they applied the knees first rule to all incidents half the comp would be on report. How many times do you see a player on the ground and has taken possession, then a player comes in front on with knees and all. Rarely in these cases is a free paid and it usually the bloke going for the footy who gets pinged for holding the ball. You see the poor bugger who has made the play get up holding his head after getting pinged. Not to mention the 3rd, 4th and 5th player who comes over the top recklessly.Comment

He's challenging itBefore you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way you'll be a mile away and he'll be shoeless.Comment

A couple of years ago Sam Mitchell was dropping the knees left right and centre and got away with it. You had to wonder if it was a team tactic. Was most strange for a fair ball player like him.Comment

Of course it was deliberate. It was all part of the stupidity that was "unsociable football" or however that angry little man wanted to justify thuggery with.Comment

Worth the challenge but I dont think he'll get off, the afl has made it clear that the person over the ball needs to be protected, even though the MRP can be very inconsistent with their decisions. Watch all the 'protected species' comments if he does happen to win the challenge.Comment

Surjan can slide in because he got there first. All he risked injuring was the ball. Goodes cannot slide in because Surjan got there first and it was a dangerous situation - it turned out that Surjan wasn't badly hurt, but Goodes could have easily broken his ribs or knocked him out. If you're second to the ball you have to tackle legally, ie. keep your feet and tackle between the knees and the shoulder. The onus is on the player, just like you have to stop yourself clocking someone whose head is over the ball. The AFL has said for 2 years you can't slide in and quite rightly because it's dangerous and the spirit of the game is to protect the player that goes in first and puts his hands on the ball.
It's a shame, but it's Adam Goodes' fault - not the commentators, On the Couch, Netball, the MRP, Chris Judd or Jacob Surjan.Comment

Good luck Goodesy - I think he should get off too, and who cares whatever bleating ensues from oppositon supporters as a result.
It would be interesting to hear Jacob Surjan's take on the whole incident. He is a particularly hard nut (Port's Bevo perhaps?) and I kinda like the way he plays the game. I don't think he'd have much of an issue with the slide, and he did slide in himself - it'd take more than what happened to hurt him. I reckon he would go into bat for Goodesy if required....Comment

I'm looking forward to watching the Rugby League this week. At least they and the supporters understand its a body contact sport and as such sometimes @@@@ happens. Get rid of thuggery most definitely but to penalised trivial incidents like this just beggars belief...And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

Meh i agree about what other supporters think. Stuff em.
Goodsey would get off but sadly he won't and is risking further suspension. While people like Judd are allowed to nearly poke out players eye and then be rewarded with a brownlow.
One of the many aspects why following this code is frustrating.Comment
