I thought I'd go an do some research on what information is available about the relative cost of living between Melbourne and Sydney.
Melbourne is 7% cheaper than Sydney :: Cost of Living Comparison
Think Melbourne is expensive? You're right
I'm not sure how the AFL came up with the flat 9.8% allowance over all other non-Sydney clubs? According to the link you provide, Sydney is currently 7% more expensive than Melbourne but i would be sure its more than 9.8% over somewhere like Adelaide. So I'd argue the smaller cities are still getting a better deal currently.
If there is a push to change this allowance, it should be:
1. Salary cap for EVERY club gets adjusted up or down based on their city's cost of living; and
2. The % amounts are tied to an independent publicly available index. e.g. In my job, we sign multi-year contracts with our clients and we always have a clause whereby we can alter our prices each year based on the ABS published inflate rate.CIA Agent to Policeman: "Have you ever had anti-terrorist training?"

There are too many anachronisms with the afl to isolate sydney's COL allowance as the one injustice in the game. Don't buy into the Swan hater's logic. If the COL is on the table, father/son, melb home games, the draw etc should be considered & at least we have never tanked.
And Tippett will be ours today!Comment

Cardinal, you make a good point. For instance, I'd estimate that Hawthorn had more than a 9.8% advantage by virtue of having played 13 of their 22 regular season games at the MCG. Then they played all 3 of the finals games there as well. The fact that they couldn't kick straight when the conditions should have been so familiar to them ... well, that's just how bad they had the yips.
OTOH, Swans played one game there before the GF and that was against Tiggers on 12th May during Round 7!
Yet, Hawthorn complain about COL. Unreal.Comment

FMD. Honestly every man and his dog has come out last week and over this weekend to have a crack at our club, the value of our premiership and the integrity of our list management. I'm @@@@ing sick of it. We just won a premiership. We are on the verge of signing a quality KPF who wants to come to our club. Piss off with your jealous, catty, slandering bull@@@@ and come back when you have some facts.
If Colless or Ireland don't release a strong media statement tomorrow I will be very disappointed.
This club was shat all over many times over our history. Other clubs have picked off us like vultures, circling us like a carcass so that could steal a bevy of talented players for next to nothing. They've tried to kill us twice, abandoned us in Sydney and finally, finally after all of that we built ourselves up into a strong club, a respected club, but one that has to still fight hard to survive.
I'm done with being disrespected by other clubs. Put up or shut up - don't cry to the media because we won a premiership you thought you had in the bag from the preseason or becasue one of your players wants to leave your club.

Ireland said in his statement no premiership players on the table.
