If 3 months in Thailand doing Muay Thai didn't lower his anxiety then he was definately drinking at the wrong bars. The Beer Garden Soi 7 Sukhimvit would cure even extreme cases of anxiety.

I had a chuckle over some of these posts, but to be honest it's a bit disappointing that so few people are able to take seriously the issue of anxiety among footballers and the well-documented benefits of meditation for the treatment of it. People complain about BigFooty, and with some justification, but this thread is not what I would call a resounding demonstration of the superiority of RWO.

I disagree, there have been a lot of serious posts interspersed with less serious posts. I don't think they're making light of MM and his anxiety, in fact a few posters have opened up about either their personal battles or those close to them about anxiety and depression. Any jest is only to lighten the tone but not to ridicule. Humour has it's place when it comes to dealing with issues.

Fair enough DamY, but I still think there's a fair bit of wilful ignorance here. It always used to p*ss me off when people characterised Kirky as weird, and the stereotype of meditation as some kind of exotic indulgence is so hackneyed it's become tiresome. As well as the hand-wringing about the psychological pressures on AFL footballers, it would be nice to see some constructive and mature discussion about proven solutions.

I thought it was a great piece by Caroline Wilson and love Mitch's honesty in being prepared to speak about it. As a sporting coach of young kids I see examples of it sometimes, although not to that level, and it's good to read about it happening at the highest level to help give me some extra insight into helping the kids manage it. I also have a very close family member who has suffered from it for many years as part of a greater psychiatric condition and I know first hand the paralysing effect it can have if it is allowed to. Well done to Mitch for being able to find the best way for him to deal with it and being able to play footy.

Now, back to the double entendres. Anyone want me to give them one?

Tony Barber was always a nervous wreck before a live performance and intimated he used to throw up sometimes. This is not as unusual as people might think. If you are going out to perform in front of 30,000 plus people every week there is probably good reason for a bit of anxiety.

I am glad that there is a diagnosis as now the problem once analysed is easier to manage and hopefully eventually cure. I am aware that in certain cases Anxiety Disorder is not curable but only treatable but here's hoping for Mitch's sake.

                    Re: Mitch Morton

I was treated for severe anxiety worrying about whether I had severe anxiety or not.

Bloods05, just remember some people use humour about subjects that are particularly close to their heart. It's a coping mechanism for them.

If any of my posts are construed to be making light of a real disorder then I apologise.

Stella junior struggles terribly with anxiety issues, it's been a very big challenge and something I've worked with him over on a daily basis and has at times been more than a tad distressing. For what it's worth, big boy, I read all the posts and laughed at them and didn't think for a second anyone belittled Mitch's issues.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline

Besides which if anyone had actually crossed the line liz wooda pulled the plug by now. How this thread has treated MM comes down to affection for the disarming honesty he displays.

On the contrary, I have anxiety too and I've found humour has often helped me to make light of it, sometimes I can't help but look back and laugh at some of the things I worry about!

I think Mitch will always have it, usually these things stay with you, but I imagine it must make a huge difference to him knowing that he has the support of your teammates. This 'Bloods culture' might be tough to break into, but once you do, you know that they will have your back.

I too have a wife and daughter that suffer from anxiety attacks. One of the best ways to deal with it is to have a laugh about it.

I think we all suffer from anxiety.
It's just a matter of extremities.

It's really a matter of whether you see anxiety as something you "have" for good and can therefore do no more than manage it, or as something you can get rid of permanently. I fall into the latter camp. Of course we all get anxious at certain times, in highly stressful or traumatic situations, but that is not the same as having an anxiety condition, as seems to be the case for Mitch and some of the people who have posted here. I firmly believe that condition can be eliminated completely, or at the very least greatly ameliorated, by proper instruction in and regular practice of meditation. It has certainly worked for me and for many people I know, and also for many AFL footballers and other athletes.
