It would br crazy to give up Smith and Parker. I'm not sure where Parker came into the discussions. To rely on Rampe and Johnson in defence, a constantly re-injuring Mitchell in the Centre would be a huge mistake.

We have no-one in the reserves remotely capable of filling either of their shoes, and both arguably have their best years of football ahead of them.

It may 'sound' ridiculous, but if the coaching staff were to believe that those 2 positions of small defender & midfield/forward pocket rotation can be covered with Biggs/Rampe/Johnson & Mitchell/Rohan/Jetta/Lamb, at the same time freeing up cap space and acquiring the 2nd best talent in the land....... You'd be silly not to do it.

I hate this trade period. It's like camping in a forest when a gale comes up at night. You lie awake fearful that a huge tree branch is about to fall on the tent!

I avoid that fear by only camping in 2 1/2 star motels. You only have to worry about bed bugs.
Trade Period demonstrates why loyalty in football has disappeared into history.

I see our recruitment of Franklin to be 50% strategic (marketing wise) and 50% player. The Swans are worried that GWS will deminish our brand something that clubs in Melbourne would know absolutely nothing about. The club has worked tirelessly to penetrate the NSW/ACT market since moving in 1982 and with no help from the VFL/AFL until recent times. A GWS with a Franklin would be a real marketing threat to our brand and influx of younger supporters. So I see the Franklin move as much as a marketing coup as that as a player.

.....which leads me to the 50% player. A calculated risk hoping that he stays healthy and also gels well with our current playing group. If it is true and we are trying to position ourselves into the top 3 draft pick tells me either of two things:
            1) The recruitment team need the early pick to on trade for a valuable opposition player being consistent with the premiership window theory; or
            2) They have identified a very, very good kid they want to get their hands on.

Unless Smith or Parker have expressed a desire to return to Victoria, I wouldn't be trading any of these two. Parkers' performance in the finals was an eye opener for me and he could be anything. Smooch , well he just blankets the most dangerous small forward every week and I'm not convinced we have anyone else like him on our list. They don't call him "the babysitter' for nothing! If Smooch does want more time in the midfield then I wouldn't hesitate in giving him run with roles on dangerous midfielders (ie Bird).

Great analysis mightybloods. I have faith in our recruitment team. They rarely get it wrong.

Smith for Pick #2 is close to the mark....Parker for Pick #2 is probably a win for Melbourne. A bone fide proven 250 game player with 50 games and a premiership on the board. Great body, great attitude really good skills. Presumably we would consider giving him (or Smithy) up for the silk of James Aisch.....but not BOTH - FFS!

surely they wouldnt trade PROVEN players for some UNPROVEN kid, despite how talented he may be. does every single high draft pick work out? NO.

im going to stick my neck out on this one............any talk of Parker leaving is crazy BUT i must say that someone saw something in Smithy a few years ago and took the punt on him being a small defender......someone on this forum no doubt thought that Smith would excel in this role when many doubted

I am going to take the punt on Rampe..........I think he can play the role of small defender with the luxury of being able to also play on med talls ie 190cm when needed

I think Dane played in a team this year that over achieved and i he did in my report card a 3.5 out of 5 stars...........I think the kid can quite easily be a 4 to 4.5 stars out of 5 in season 2014 !

in conjunction to the idea of Rampe taking on a smithy role i would say that Shaw and Macca and Mal will still be floating thru the backline and we are stacked for small backs despite a different role then Smithy for Macca and Mal but Shaw can play tight very well when needed

I think the speculation (more fictional on a day when nothing is happening) about Smith is related to his home state. Remember last year - The rumours had Grundy returning to SA as part of the deal to get Tippett.

I doubt Parker wants out...He signed a new contract this year.

As far as I can tell, the only people to bring Parker into the mix is right here on RWO. I haven't seen it anywhere in the media.

The other Premiership player could be Grundy.

I find all these rumours of players being traded unfounded, scurrilous and ludicrous

We should trade Parker or Mcveigh for pick two though. That way in four years time we *may* get a player as good

Pretty sure Mcveigh is on the market already

I've just read that Shaun Hampson has been traded for Richmond's 2nd round pick. That should mean that the Swans should get a mid second round pick for White!
