If the Swans were interested in pick 2 or 3 perhaps we would be looking to draft Matt Scharenberg, rather than another midfielder like Aish or Kelly. We could still get a pretty good mid at pick 15. Eventually Scharenberg could slot into Rampe's spot and Rampe can go into the midfield, where he has played before at lower levels, or if Smith were part of the deal, take his place as the designated key defender. I can see Smith wanting to get some relief for being a lock down defender to do something more dynamic in a midfield role, but it wouldn't be looking good given the number of good midfielders we have. Players like Smith and Mcglynn would likely get regular stints in a Melbourne midfield.

Seriously, we would be mental to trade Parker, given that he is the perfect long term replacement for Jude.

I think Nick Smith is a fantastic player, and I'd be disappointed to see him go. I'd prefer McGlynn to be traded before Smith.

Why would you put Rampe in the midfield? The one place where we are well and truly stocked is the midfield.

I assume the reason this talk is happening is to free up some money for the Buddy move.. Since they said it may be a package deal it could be Mcglynn, Smith, Grundy and Everitt. I cannot believe they would consider Parker, though it worries me that Roosey is keen on getting some good midfielders and may have his eye on Parker. I know from his commentary that he is a big fan of Parker.

If we can find someone else over the next year to play the small defender role as well as Smiffy does, by all means, release him to the midfield. We were lucky with injury in the midfield this year, with the talls the most affected. Next year we might lose a Hanners or a Jack for a few weeks. Plenty of scope for more depth, especially with all our mids expected to double as resting small forwards.

I find the descriptions and hype around this year's mooted top crop not that exciting. I am sure many of them will become sound players, but they sound more likely to be Gaffs, Scullys, Trengoves and the like, rather than the next NicNats, Judds or O'Mearas. And pretty much every year, one of the top five is almost guaranteed to be a mediocre flop at best.

We're actually quite light on in the squad for 25-27 year olds, probably because our drafting around the Vez/Johnston era wasn't that great. Once the older players move on, we'll need all the wise heads we can get alongside Jack, JPK to provide the leadership. Smith is respected for his leadership as much as for his footy.

Add to that, he's not really the kind of player (in his current role, nor probably even as a one paced midfielder) that a club like Melbourne desperately needs, not for pick 2. His leadership would be valuable, but I say go get stuffed, Mr Roos.

If we need to jettison that many players to get Buddy, then getting Buddy is a bad idea. The Hawks won the premiership this year by reducing Buddy's role and getting a far more even performance across the board than they did the previous year. The Cats and Dockers are well spread for talent too. There's not a single way to win a premiership but you do need quality right across the board, not concentrated in a small handful of players.

I thought the reason we were off loading players was not to fit Buddy in but to create space for promotion of our rookies.

                  i concur billy

i would struggle to believe that we are having a fire sale post Buddy ???? that doesnt make sense to me and is a contradiction to the Bloods culture

So we trade Nick Smith so we can promote Shane Biggs to the senior list???? I hope not.

liz i think it would be fair to say we are all guessing and Billy or myself are not alluding to your example at all

I am alluding to $200k in savings being spread amongst 2 to 4 players not just one and certainly not a swap of biggs for smith !

so given that we are guessing but making an argument to support our beliefs .........the logic behind keeping depth and a spreading $ amongst our rookies thru to bottom sal cap players makes sense when you allocate almost 20% to match winners like Buddy and Tip in my opinion

PS - i love Smithy as much as anyone but if he costs $300k pa and Rampe is $100k i would personally start to take a Rampe emerging player as a serious option and a saving of $200k pa......Rampe in his first season shows everything if not more then Smithy in his first season in my opinion.......thats not gospel.....just my opinion

Not exactly. My son has had Nick Smith's number on the back of his Swans guernsey even before Nick became "famous".

We do need to create space for players such as Rampe and Jack though. Biggs as well I suppose. Personally, I would rather see McVeigh, Benny and Grundy go before Nick. I hope Nick doesn't.

There might not be any truth to Nick getting traded anyway.

Fortunately, its not a problem I have to work out. It's the job of those getting paid to do it and the outcome falls on their heads and not on anyone's from this website.

At this stage, we have as much evidence on say Pick 2 or 1 failing as we do on Rampe, Johnson or Biggs going on to become 200 game players from what they have achieved in their first year in the firsts or part thereof.

Mitchell and Reid have enormous potential but are their injuries this year short term or something that will keep happening???. Who knows.

I think what this year again showed, you can't win a Grand Final unless you're near full strength and/or not carrying injuries.

I think the speculation (more fictional on a day when nothing is happening) about Smith is related to his home state. Remember last year - The rumours had Grundy returning to SA as part of the deal to get Tippett.
He said so himself. I should also add he was quick to point out that even though a few players weren't exactly thrilled when Tippett arrived, he won them over with his commitment to the club (both on and off the field) and his attitude to training, especially during his long suspension. Kurt bought in, the question is will Buddy?

If we're considering letting a talented youngster go I can only assume it's either a legit homesickness or salary cap management (ala Schneider/Dempster for Marty).
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
