Josh Mahoney from Melbourne was just interviewed on SEN. Andy Maher specifically asked about Nick Smith and Josh replied that they had been speaking to Sydney and other clubs about a number of players, but Smith's name has never been brought up. He then went on to describe the sort of player they are looking for and described Parker down to the bootstraps.

In this new free agency era, you will see clubs looking to move players on before free agency forces them to lose a player for limited compensation or have to pay a lot more to keep them! If the Hawks had moved Franklin on after 2012, they would be in a better position! The new rule for clubs with 25 year olds could become, sign an extension or we will aggressively trade you out with one year left on your contact! I don't know about Nick Smiths contract, but if he hits free agency, the swans will be in a weaker condition!
Free agency would have easily delivered ROK to the Hawks at the end of 2008!Comment

Nick Smith would be one of the most underrated players in the competition. Even the rookie listed Rampe gets more kudos than him in the media. Not only are they trying to rebuild their team they are trying to get bums on seats. Whether or not he is rated by external coaches (which I am sure he is) - Melbourne would need a 'big fish' with pick two and Smith is not it.
I would rather trade Parker than Smith, but would also much prefer to keep them both.He ate more cheese, than time allowedComment

I couldn't help myself, but not trying to devise the worst case scenario with regards the Buddy deal and the trading period for the Swans.
If the AFL plans to punish the Swans for snatching Buddy from GWS, which is very possible, they can wait with their approval of the deal till 18th, leaving the Hawks to respond with their right to match the offer until 21st. That leaves Sydney in a serious limbo, because the Swans will be limit in time that is left for trading (until 25th). I hope the recruitment is ready to face that possibility.Comment

I'm sure the delay in approving the deal is at least partly cosmetic. It will get done though. The man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible newsComment

Honestly IMHO regardless if the contract dooms us or not, the AFL can't be seen to be interfering in contracts based on possible future scenarios for one club. If the contract is within the games laws and the swans did their own due diligence in coming up with it over an extended period of time. I'd expect legal action would be the result if they were to deny it. Thoughts?Comment

Just another fit of pique from of Fat Andy, he really hates it when he doesn't get what he wants. Perhaps he'll ask the MRP to re-examine Buddy's high bump on Mal, and then suspend our newly recruited forward for half a season. . . . .Comment

Without sounding dramatic - if the Club has a player that might want to leave and/or a player in a position the Club feels they have surplus of - for the benefits of fielding a strong team into the future, anything is up as an option.
