I could be wrong, and forgive me if it has been covered already, but wasn't Nick a relatively reluctant professional footballer? I seem to recall when he came to the club he wasn't overly sure about moving, but beyond that wasn't overly sure if he had the desire to really go for it at the top level?

I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time -
Yes, yes we all love Smith. However if he wants to go home there isn't much we can do.
I would much rather get Varcoe for him then some 2nd round draft pick when we lose him to free agency.
Can't understand the dislike of Varcoe here. Yes he has had some injuries, but the guy is a talent.Comment

Or, perhaps, the club might trade Smith the same way they traded O'Keeffe? If there's appropriate compensation for him they might say yes, if not they can kiss trade goodbye. Also, the way the club was treated during the Buddy saga they might make trading more difficult for some clubs. Just a thought.Comment

Varcoe could have been a great player if not for all those injuries, which is why Geelong are looking to trade him. Why would anyone want to take the risk.
Another theory on the Smith rumours aside from the go home factor is that we need to find spots for up and comers Lamb, Cunningham, Lloyd, BJ and Perris; there doesn't seem to be spots opening up in the midfield so we might be looking to create one either down back or in the the forward line, hence the trade talk about Smith and McGlynn.Last edited by Ludwig; 11 October 2013, 03:53 PM.Comment

Should Smith goes, who do we have to replace him?
My options would include: Bird, Biggs or Cunningham. I think all 3 could have some really good qualities as that lock down defender. Also, I can't see them getting a game in other positions just yet.Comment

I always knew that Smith was underrated by other clubs' supporters, but I've now come to the realisation he's underrated by our supporters too.Comment

Anyone (Liz?) know what senior list size GWS have in 2014 and future years? I know they were given an expanded list for much longer than Gold Coast.
Whilst they still have a few trades to do, I'm trying to work out how any ND picks they might use.Comment

Absolutely spot on, Smith is one of our most important players, the job he does week in and week out is outstanding. Varcoe for Smith would be like swapping Dre for O'Meara, ask any cats supporter and most will say its not just the injuries even when he got back he was very poor in disposal and decision making. Maybe Smithy wants to go back to cricket....we could use a good leggie these days.Comment

Varcoe is ok, but injury prone and has not developed as hoped. Certainly would be very disappointed if we lost Smith and got Varcoe. Imo he is the best at his role in the AFL at the moment."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment
