If you lose your big bodies, you will end up with a team that looks like GWS in 2012. St Kilda were a very strong football club from 2004 - 2011. What has happened? How long in Nick Riewoldt going to continue is these circumstances?
They will have a lot of free agency money over the next couple of years, but that will mean nothing if the talent does not want to play for you i.e GWS and Franklin.Comment

Trade Whispers / Rumours and Confirmations
I'm a bit torn in the high draft pick question.
If you look through the 2014 team topics, people have put up some very good teams. One of the common features is that there's some very good players that are going to be left out of games, particularly through the midfield.
Managing a football club for sustained success means finding a balance between current and future capability. This means that where an excess current capability is identified, it should probably be traded for a future capability. It's also in the players interests because top-class players don't want to spend time playing NEAFL. Thats why trading Jesse made a lot of sense in light of the Buddy deal. The 'our window is now so we should horde current capability' is a Melbourne club mentality which sees them drop to the bottom of the ladder every 5-7 years. See St Kilda for that strategy in action. The Swans can't afford that strategy because the Sydney market is too fickle.
On the other hand, the club needs to plan to rotate players and manage the risk of injuries. Many commentators seem to think a top 30 might be closer to the mark. However, I don't know if you need to have the class of players that we have in positions 23-30 to keep things ticking over during the season though.
I strongly agree with those who say it's not worth trading proven players for POTENTIAL stars, but the question is more complex than that. As we've seen this week and through some of the Swans' more astute trades, taking clever risks is what makes our club great.
I also can't fathom why we'd need to bundle players like Smith, Jetta or Rohan to get a high draft pick when they were highish draft picks themselves and have since developed into stars or have shown that they soon will be. Melbourne and others need them more than we need a high draft pick so surely they're worth it in their own right.
As for who to trade, I've got no idea. I'd have a list of about 50 and some serious salary cap issues if I was in charge. But as any broke gambler will tell you, you need to bet big to win big, so whoever it is, I can guarantee that if we do play for a top 5 pick, it'll be someone that we won't like losing.Comment

When is Nick Smith out of Contract and turns into a Free Agent?
Could that be the reason there are rumours of him being traded now while he has currency? He might be delaying contract talks until later next year (ala Buddy, Goddard, Daisy etc).

Hopefully, playing alongside Buddy in the 2014 Premier team will overcome any homesickness - or he can go play for the Dees.Comment

If a player has a year left on his contract before free agency, can clubs trade that player if the player does not agree to the trade. For Example - The Swans say to Nick Smith we are going to send you to the Demons. Can Nick Smith reject the trade and tell the Swans that he will see the final year of his contract out and won?t be joining any other team this year?
Can someone help me with the question?Comment

I said in a couple of earlier posts that clubs may start trading their star players one year before free agency, to not get caught in a situation where they get very little for that player under free agency.

Hawks - "We're bringing in another high profile player on the back of winning a premiership."
Media - "Well done Hawks. Plenty of room in the salary cap as you've lost Buddy, two other lesser premiership players and a fringe player"
Swans - "We've signed Franklin"
Media - "How can you afford him?"
Swans - "We've lost four premiership players and a highly paid finals player who wants a trade."
Media - "Bloody cheats!"Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment
