I could be wrong, and forgive me if it has been covered already, but wasn't Nick a relatively reluctant professional footballer? I seem to recall when he came to the club he wasn't overly sure about moving, but beyond that wasn't overly sure if he had the desire to really go for it at the top level?
He told Roos, point blank, when Roos rang him to congratulate and welcome him to the Swans.
Apparently they struggled to see eye to eye for some time after that.
From memory he was torn between Cricket and Footy...He had exceptional potential at both.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

Isn't this Nick Smith stuff just the replacement Swans rumour after Horse completely quashed the Sam Reid, Luke Parker trades which had generated a life of their own? Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment
-
Who at our football club has even mentioned Smith in despatches?Comment
-
Yep, I reckon if we went back to the start of this thread (and I couldn't be bothered), Smithys name wouldn't be mentioned until the last few pages.Comment

"Swan on the fly? Speculation persists that the Swans' premiership defender Nick Smith could be on the trade table. The Swans see Smith as a future leader but he has strong family roots in Melbourne and often considers a move back home.
The Swans would not like to see a player of such quality depart but they could be prepared to cut their losses for the right price.
Moving up the draft order is believed to be on the Swans' mind but there is some suggestion the Swans have been talking to Geelong."Comment

If you could perform your profession in your home city for roughly the same money, would you take the opportunity to move?
We just recruited a bloke who wants to live in Sydney. If one of our players decided they want to live somewhere else, I'd be disappointed to lose them but I wouldn't be cracking it.
Everyone is different. Just telling people to grow up is simplistic in my view.
Home is where you make it. Not a city or a suburb. These are grown man, not kids on their mother's teet.
The going home excuse is just a convenient thing to tell supporters of the club they're leaving imo.Comment

Like an Actor wanting to make LA home, or a Banker wanting to make New York home, Buddy saw Bondi Beach as his Beverly Hills or his Central Park West!
I agree that home is where you want to make it and Buddy has made Sydney the favoured home of the AFL star, like LA is the favoured home of the Actor. Watch in the years to come as young AFL players will move to Bondi with the same enthusiasm as actors moving to LA!Comment

Yes, he has signed a contract so he is definately a giant now.
We haven't received anything yet because I think the Swans are working on another deal, the result of which may be used in the Mummy deal. i.e obtaining a draft pick or trading another player to GWS.Nothing like a good light bulb moment.Comment

Agree that LA provides the most work for actors, but Sydney provides the best working environment for AFL footballers. Just ask Buddy, Tippo and Mummy - all loving Bondi Beach. Mummy could have gone to a Victorian Team but elected to stay in Sydney, which is known as the best working environment for AFL footballers!Comment

Agreed to terms, maybe, don't see how he can have signed an actual contract seeing as he has not been traded or delisted - therefore is not actually available to be signed yet and is still (technically) a Sydney player. Don't contracts go til October 31?"I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005Comment
