Well, keeping them goalless is no doubt important, but hurting them on the way out would be more of an advantage. It's not to say that Smith couldn't move up the gound and be just as effective, where he could be more important locking down the opposition "quarterback". McVeigh was devastating behind the ball, but Smith doesn't inflict the same damage, albeit with a slightly different role.

Just deviating a little, can any of the RWO gurus (Ugg, Liz, etc) explain to me what happens to the contracts specifically regarding payments of players who move to other clubs whilst they are still under contract e.g. Heath Shaw who is in the middle of his current contract and say goes to GWS. Is his contract money included in Collingwood's salary cap if he transfers clubs?
I'm guessing once he is traded to GWS, his existing contract with Collingwood would be voidedComment

That's my point. If he isn't traded, we will have to delist him when the list lodgement is done. Won't he then be able to walk to Collingwood without entering the draft?Bloods

He'd have to nominate for the PSD and then hope he was still available come Collingwood's pick - he couldn't walk straight thereComment

Everyone seems pretty happy about White wanting to leave the Swans.
Not so much the case when Rocca and Grant wanted to leave.
Without knowing what went on behind closed doors....
Swans tried to move White on after developing him sticking with him for 6 years, giving him every opportunity which he wasn't able to capitalise on.
Couldn't be traded, so the Swans still stayed with him in hope that he might show something.
Through injury, he gets another opportunity, which he makes the most of and puts in to place all of the things he has learned at the Swans over 7 years.
He does well, and now wants to bail.
I'm happy for the Swans to look after him to a degree, but unless he's dating a board members daughter, it's business, and through being the good guys, maybe the Swans are not getting all they can for him.The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

It won't come to this. The Swans and Pies will reach an agreement both can live with for the reasons Triple B and others have provided above, and because Sydney and Collingwood have a long track record of agreeing reasonable trades and understand that sometimes you pay slight overs and sometimes you get slight unders.Comment

Comparisons with Grant and Rocca aren't really valid because they were young, highly rated players who the Swans saw as an integral part of the side moving forward. They didn't want to lose those players and would have hung onto them had the two individuals not had their hearts set on going back to Melbourne.Comment

The silence is deafening me, we must be up to something in the remaining trade period, just based on our list numbers.
They are once again, we had 38 on the main list most other teams had 40. Three retirements, one delisting, Mumford and White gone leaves just 32 plus Franklin makes it 33, Rampe the only upgrade makes 34. That's without the touting possible defections of Everitt and Armstrong.
That's four more players plus that we need to find to get the list back up to the minimum 38. Given the number of Free Agent compo picks to be slotted into the ND, even our current third rounder will be mid 50s and there's not much that far out that you'd want to be handing the obligatory two year contract to.
We will get a pick inside our third rounder for White, Mumford will only bring a used lolly wrapper from GWS I'd reckon and that won't be used so if that's what's offered by GWS, make Mummy go to the PSD.
So I'm thinking we must be eyeing off another player or two during the trade period. Just have to wait and see I suppose.Comment

Why Rampe the only upgrade? Hard to believe BJ won't get upgraded and you'd think Biggs is also a massive chance.
The fact that they elected to place Perris on the rookie list suggests we are going to elevate quite a few of those current rookies.Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment

We will have to upgrade or delist one of Brandon Jack, Naismith or Robinson to fit Perris in because you can only have 3 of these Sydney player types on your Rookie List. Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

Wouldn't BJ be a natural to get upgraded? I wouldn't delist Naismith under any circumstance, and Robinson has grown in ability as the year progressed. I am all for keeping on a bloke whose season improves as it goes on. Could NOT imagine BJ not being upgraded. If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

White may have done reasonably well in the second half of the year when he got his chance but he's still not in the Swans' best 22 for 2014. He knows it and the Swans know it. Even with Goodes and Reid to return he wasn't going to be in the best 22. And even less so with Buddy arriving.
He was great on the wing and great at CHF.The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

If all come back from injury we will add 5 KPPs compared to 2nd half 2013: AJ, LRT, Reid, Franklin and Goodes. That's going to make if very difficult for both White and Everiitt to hold their spots. I think they deserve to be AFL starters at some club, but it will just difficult at the Swans. At this point in their careers you can understand not wanting to be depth players any more.Comment

At same time wouldn't be surprised to see one of those picks used or downgraded for a ruckman before close of trade play.
Would think that GWS would be open to a bundled deal for Dre and Mummy as it lets them keep their number 1 PSD pick up their sleeve...
PS - how excruciating is a three week trade period....Last edited by Mug Punter; 16 October 2013, 05:27 PM.Comment
