Love Goodes for all that he has contributed over his career at the Swans, but it's time to go. Can't bear the thought of watching him go downhill next year (in all probability). While we're at it, can we please have just one captain too? Bit over this 'share the love' captaincy thing of the last years. One tough nut who will stand up and lead when it counts.Comment

Rance would be wonderful for the Swans. He is certainly better than out two key defenders at the moment. He is 24 years old and a better proposition than Frawley. He would solve all our key defensive concerns. That last quarter against the Swans at ANZ was incredible. He is a top five AFL key defender.
This is just my opinion.Comment

So, what do we think is fair for Membrey?
2nd round? 3rd round?
He was initially pick 46 so couldn't see us getting much more than that...even though I think he's more valuable than that.
I'm assuming it will be a draft pick and not a player however you never know.Twitter @cmdil

If true, I think it'll be regrettable. Goodsey should bow out and not risk playing on a year too long. Hope he proves me wrong, and good luck to Tim if he does go, but I think the club should be taking a harder line with Goodsey and not just leaving it up to him, which has been the official line.Comment

Hypothetically, would we take a top 5 pick for Reid + Membrey?
I'd be happy to do that, IF it meant we could keep Mal.

The club wouldn't have allowed Goodes to come out and state publicly that he wants to play on if they were going to give him the tap on the shoulder...they would have saved him the embarrassment.Twitter @cmdil

Unfortunately our negotiation position is very weak. He could fall straight through to the Pre-Season draft and be picked up by St Kilda or Melbourne. The Swans get nothing in that instance.
The best we could possibly hope for is another Victorian club apart from St Kilda or Melbourne to want him. A trade would then eventuate. The best we could hope for is another player or a pick in the 30s.
There will be some blow back on the Goodes decision to play on, but Adam has earned the right to choose his Swans destiny and Membrey has not improved his engine quick enough. To even put Membrey ahead of a Goodes is like asking my wife to sit in the back of the car, while promoting my four year old to the front passenger seat.Comment

This is starting to look like the St Kilda model. Acclaimed the best team in football. Lose the GF. Sink to the bottom.
I can only imagine that our coaching staff didn't rate Membrey as highly as I do (as well as many others). You just don't let a high quality player go so easily because you can't provide playing opportunities for him.
Based on playing opportunities last season, it would seem that Towers was ahead of Membrey in the forward line pecking order. So perhaps that had as much influence on his decision as Goodes staying on.Last edited by Ludwig; 2 October 2014, 12:06 PM.Comment

Membrey was never going to stay. I recall his first interview after his name was called out in 2012, he seem quite disappointed to be heading to Sydney.
In saying that though, had he been given opportunity to secure a senior position things may have panned out differently. You cannot gift youngsters games they do not deserve, but I truly believe he has been hard done by playing only 1 game over his 2 seasons.
Hopefully there's enough interest from Victorian clubs so that we can negotiate a good deal for the club, otherwise a team will be getting a bargain.Ed Considine's day out - Round 3, 16th April 1995.
