I don't understand how any of it works so I will just wait to see who we get and who's gone and that will do me.

I would have rated Bird about the same as Matt Rosa, who was traded for pick 31 from Gold Coast. Wow, GC are really poor at this game. It's hard to understand the Giants' giveaway. You would think that they could have gotten something, and in for a couple of players something significant, for the players they gave to Carlton for what amounts to be a fairly even swap of draft picks. All 4 academy clubs seem to be getting seriously screwed. At least the Giants got so many concessions that they can afford to do this and giving away players to Carlton doesn't hurt anyone.
It may be worth noting that all of the top 8 draft picks this year will be with either academy clubs or clubs that have done favourable deals with an academy club. These deals only make sense if there is an understanding that none of the top 8 picks will be used on an academy player, but I'm just trying to see something positive here that really doesn't exist.Last edited by Ludwig; 21 October 2015, 02:10 PM.Comment

I'm sure Bird is looking for a regular game. The Swans shopped him around and found little interest. Not unreasonable given his age, his injury history, and the fact he struggles to get a game with us. So the Swans found him a home.
I think putting Bird's interests first demonstrates to the other players that the club will try to find a way to help them out - even if they are under contract. It's a mutual respect thing. I think players are more likely to sign a new contract if they know the club will work with them if their situation changes; and that in turn gives us more leverage when we do trade e.g. Jetta. The alternative might well be more free agents.
In the long run I'm feel this approach probably helps the Swans attract and retain players.
Bird's been a loyal servant of the club. I'll miss him but wish him well.Comment

I'm disappointed by the trade, unless there's something more in it but I'm happy that Craig gets to play on - albeit as a Bomber! He's been unhappy about not playing seniors and that would be toxic if we hung onto him to see out his contract and in case we had enough injuries to recall him. We have a great reputation as player managers and that continues. Hopefully, Mills falls down the bidding order. Would Ross do the dirty on us? Would we let him have Mills?

I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment

If Melbourne bid pick 3 we are stuffed. 1787 points needs our first three picks and downgrades pick 54 to pick 58.
If this mornings weak swapping of picks and giving away Bird was predicated on Carlton, Brisbane, GC and Essendon not bidding on Mills so he slipped at least to 7, you can bet there were some people at the Swans feeling very sick when the news of GC handing Melbourne, yes Melbourne of all clubs pick 3.
This could end very badly given the other deals we could have done with pick 14 to clubs who were desperately in need of a second first rounder. Gutted if Melbourne bid pick 3 for Mills.
There had better be some FA action from us coming up, like Talia and Adcock and Dempsey or this years trade/draft could be looking very sad indeed.Comment

The concept of "gentlemen's agreements" bothers me in this context.
If the authorities see it as similar to price fixing, participating clubs could be in VERY hot water. Maybe could be construed as draft interference?
"Vexatious bidding' is also a bother, but I can't see anything potentially illegal with it.
Lay opinions only.Comment

I suspect the reasoning is simple
We tried to shop Bird about and nobody was interested in giving anything of value up for a 27 year old.
And if we want to bring in an additional defender in Talia then we cureently have no slaary cap space and need to offload Bird. So we have made a choice based on list management.
I don't share the doom and gloom here re this, it is just a fact of life gioven we decided to invest so much of our cap in two players. I would, however, be very disappointd of we were paying Bird's salary here

We may just end up with adding Mills and a few ordinary prospects this year. I doubt we will go into deficit to any serious extent to get Dunkley, and certainly not lose our first round placement next year.
Mills will be a good addition of top end talent to our list. It seems that we will depend on players already on our list to step up in the coming years. Not much has been mentioned about getting the Irishman O"Riordan and I wouldn't underestimate the possibility of his success. He seems very talented.
Given how things have gone quiet on Michael Talia, it is looking more likely that we will get him as a DFA or a very low pick.
I quite like our list at the moment even though I can't see us mounting a serious challenge for the flag next year unless other top clubs drop off a lot or are hit by injury.

Hoping now that we are swapping pick 23 to WCE for picks 36/37 or whatever those two late 30s picks are.
Also just realised going through the draft process that 44 and later picks will move up the order on draft night as new picks are created for academy players at the top end of the order.
For example, Brisbane will have two picks created around the 10-15 mark for Keays and Hipwood, let's say they need 2000 points. So all picks after that get pushed back two picks. To make up the 2000 points, Brisbane will need to use their highest picks, all around the 38-41 mark. So those four picks disappear and all the picks after that move up four places.
So 44, 54 & 72 become 42, 52 & 70, only an extra 60 points or so but every bit helps. Same way we should trade 23 with WCE two late 30s picks, that will extinguish two picks rather than one in the Mills payment which helps our later picks move up another one.Comment
