Melbourne has pick 3 now with trade with Gold Coast Mills now most likely go at 3 Roos better not do this again. But last year they had two picks 2 and 3 and used their second pick (3) hope it won't happen

Again we a shafted Essendon wins here why did not they give up pick 24 for deal and maybe we swap 33 .16 points extra. Now we have to assume that dons wont bid on bird at 4 or 5 . BUT it now looks a monty that that "Bar..d" Roos will bid for him at 3 or 6. Should have insisted on swap of 24 and 33.Comment

We are only 16 points better off...basically giving Bird away for free
Pick 14 is worth 1161
Pick 23 (815) and 44 (362) = 1177.
Really strange trade, unless we really are 100% sure that Gold Coast won't bid at 3 and Essendon won't bid at 4 or 5.
Surely we're not paying any of his salary, either.
The Demons will bid for Mills at 3.
16 points woohoooooo.
Am i missing something???Comment

Given the Melbourne/GC swap was done pretty much the same time the Bird giveaway transpired, I'd be fairly confident the Swans KNOW that Melb won't bid on Mills at #3, by agreement Essendon won't bid on Mills at 4 or 5 and GC won't bid on Mills at #6. This pushes Mills down to #7 at worst.
If that scenario does not eventuate, meaning we effectively gave Birdy away for nothing, we have a right to be mighty pissed...Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment

I'd say that's an overestimate. I've seen recent estimates of 4 - 6 years.
I had a quick look at some data for players who debuted from 1982 onwards and retired before 2014. Average games played is about 50. The median is 23 and 75% of players played 66 games or less. Most careers are pretty short.
But I agree, the Bird trade is rubbish!Comment

The Bird trade only makes sense if the club is desperate for salary cap relief (and we are not paying any of Bird's salary next year).
The idea of gentlemen's agreements that clubs won't bid on players makes me nervous. It is tantamount to draft tampering and if it were ever provable, it would be enough for the AFL to strip away academy rights for the next decade.Comment

Wow...
It's bad enough with the AFL trying to hamstring us without our list managers doing it as well. I'm certain we could have found another club to offer us at least a late second round pick for Bird in a straight swap and held on to 14 and achieved salary cap relief. Even if we'd only gotten pick 44 for him we'd be in a better position.
This is incomprehensible and astonishing. If they've come up with some unspoken "in principle" agreement with Essendon regarding Mills that's a complete disgrace.Comment

Melbourne are a certainty to bid on Mills at 3, they will probably bid on Kennedy and Hopper as well.Twitter @cmdil

But thanks for your service Craig. You were a great guy and a great clubman for us, too often underrated.Comment

What is even happening? I eagerly anticipate Tom Harley's bull@@@@ explanation for this. 'We're not aggressively shopping Bird around' he said. Ha! This trade reeks of desperation to get rid of him.
We were the mediators of this Carlisle trade and in the end, we're the only ones who lose. Unbelievable.Comment

Craig Bird played 6 games in 2015 SIX he's not worth a first round pick or a pick in the 30's pick 72 or what ever it is low for him I agree. What this trade shows is on the second last day of the trade period no one other then Essendon wanted Bird Melbourne didn't Bulldogs didn't, its either he goes to Essendon next year and maybe plays another two or three year of AFL or we delist him end of next year, remember Paul Bevan?
It was a win win Bird gets to play some senior footy next year we get some extra points and make some more salary cap space.Comment
