Lack of members attending ANZ is a symptom of a problem the swans have in that a large percentage arent "rusted on", and if they avoid a stadium now while flags are plentiful they are likely to abandon the completely if the swans have a losing streak.

This will cause howls of outrage but only because it's close to the truth.

So in essence your saying that the Swans are just like any other sporting team in Sydney? Its a peculiar part of the Sydney sporting landscape - but chart crowds figures vs. 'performance on the field' for most major sporting teams in Sydney, and you'll see exactly the same thing - i.e. when they are going well, crowds are good, but when they are not, crowds go down the toilet. I'm sure neilfws could illustrate this trend pretty strongly in some charts.

It happens across all codes - league, afl, union, soccer (although Western Sydney may be an outlier - but give it time). Sydney sporting fans are fickle and will jump on and off very quickly (in terms of attending games) dependent upon results.

The Swans will never be in a position to draw 50K+ to every game, regardless of performance, where they play, or any other factor you can dream up - in the way a team like the Colliwobbles is able to do in Melbourne, or the Crows in Adelaide, or the Perth based teams (in particular West Coast).

At least we know you are a 'rusted on' fan of ANZ - that is not in doubt. If only more people showed such loyalty to their football club as you do to a Stadium, this phenomenon might not be so clear cut.

It's interesting too that State of Origin II at the MCG has apparently sold out, whilst SOO I at Homebush tickets are still on sale. For something as big as SOO in NSW and Qld, we should sell out every game here in Sydney in minutes.

I heard them mention that on 360 last night as well but I'm pretty sure there are still a fair few tickets available, unless they've sold 10-20k in the last week.

I though it was great. Imagining the woman in the white suit tucking into a hot and greasy meat pie was the best laugh I had all week.

                Why not ?

We averaged over 60,000 for a year or two at ANZ.

If you can average 35,000 in a city of 5 million, why cant you get another 15,000 (or 0.3%)

Seriously, I'm seeing that far too often these days, even with trackie dacks.

I thought the MCC were strict, but they are not that bad.

What we averaged over a couple of years at ANZ, during its peak of popularity, isn't a reflection of the general trend.

We averaged 38.7K last year with (arguably) the best squad we have ever had since moving to Sydney last year, after a sustained period of success, and a superstar recruit. Even during the heyday of ANZ as an AFL venue, and the year after a flag, we only averaged 41K (all time record).

Sydney Swans match attendances. Includes current season and historical data and statistics.

Given that GWS is only going to get better from here (thus challenging for the casual fan), and our period of success unlikely to last forever (there are always down times - despite the impact of FA), I think if we can stay at 40K year in year out, that would be an almighty achievement, let alone getting anywhere the 50K average you consider is achievable.

No matter what way you look at it, footy in Sydney is not the business it is in Melbourne. In 2014, 4 clubs in Melbourne averaged over 40K for their home games (Collingwood/Richmond/Hawthorn/Essendon) - with Carlton just under at 39.5K. In 2013, all 5 of those teams had averages above 40K.

Yep, the editors (loose term) were definitely dribbling something when that "guide" was being made.
