Or keep tippett and be in medicocityville? Tippett was fantastic in the first half of the year and everyone's a fan when fit. He hadn't played enough to impact in the finals and has consistently struggled to stay fit. If I had to choose between him and Tom Mitchell, I'd take Mitchell for sure.

I know its a bit off topic, but here comes the war on GWS, led by quadruple chins himself:

Yet he had no issue with hawthorn winning three successive premierships. It's only an uneven competition when there is a non-Victorian team involved. It's very hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who's learning to play violin. That's what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.

Sheesh Ludwig you're really entering rebuild territory there.
I think we'll be much more incremental and largely grow the list from within. Listening now to Jake Niall on OTC seems to confirm that and that we won't be huge players in the market
With a bit of luck we'll be able to get Pick 17 and perhaps pick 21 from the Lions (Towers upgrade). We may well get the Hawks' picks 14 and 32 if Gold Coast look to not throwing all their eggs in one draft basket. And whatever we get for Nanka will probably get us Olango if we rate him.
If we get picks 14, 17, 21 and 32 plus Brown then we should be able to get some good talent through. But then we also need to upgrade at least 2 players so that means seven de-listings or retirements - Ted, Jack, TomD, TomM and Towers is all I come up with, unless we get rid of BJ and Robbo, so on the face of it I think we'll be getting at least one future pick as part of any Tom M deal
If we resign Mitchell, then I think Macca should retire. He will hold back the development of the midfield if he plays.Comment

Surely this will be treated with the contempt that it deserves, it is gobsmackingly ignorant and just makes my blood boil. They are happy to have teamns from Qld and NSW as long as we are not any good.
The AFL and all its clubs signed off on these concessions so they should just let the GWS experiment ride itself out, and it will. So just let them have just a tiny bit of success please Knucklehead before you start picked at the carcass once free agency becomes a major issue for that club.
I know this won't happen but if it does then the four Northern Clubs should seriously consider boycotting a round of the H&A and the GWS Board, sponsors and coaching staff should all just resign en masse.Comment

The clear key for us is to improve our 'bottom six' - the old adage in that is where you win or lose a grand final was evident on Saturday.
Some improvement hopefully will come from the return of a couple of players (Aliir and Reid) and maybe a surprise packet or two (Newman looks the most obvious), some will come hopefully from natural improvement from players like Papley and Hewett, and maybe there might be 1 or 2 changes to the 22 through trading or drafting. I can't see us being heavily active in the trade window, rather more so at consolidating what we have, and maybe looking for a decent recycled player or two if they fit our plans on decent coin.
We usually try and bring one established player in to freshen up the list and I think this trade period will be no different.Comment

I would trade Tippett and Rohan to free up cash. After two poor grand finals, I don't think we would miss much.
We need to keep Mitchell. This cash would help keep him and also give us money in the tank to target another prized recruit. Someone like Breust would be perfect.
Tippett to Hawks for Breust +a 2nd round pick. Rohan to Cats for a 2nd round pick. Keep Mitchell.Comment

Throw in a pick around the 25 mark as well and I suspect we would be seriously tempted. We could then either have three picks in the top 25 (assuming we get an upgrade on our pick 35 with Towers) or bundle our two second rounders with our third rounder and make a player for GWS' Pick 7. Assuming of course they are not banned from the draft because they actually won a finalComment

He is clearly a better ruckman and offensive weapon than Nankervis who is who we would keep instead.
If we are over-paying him, and as none of us actually know the details of his deal this is pure conjecture (but I am prepared to speculate his high initial deal was to secure the PSD selection and that the option years are much more palatable), then we will have to subsidise any "over-payment" to another club anyway so I can't see any logic in the "get him off the wage bill" argument. And at his age and recent form we'd be lucky to get a second rounder.
We know what Gary brings and you just hope they can get him right in the head but at his best he really does give us something different.
Agree about the keep Mitchell though, more so than ever after his finals series.Comment

Yeah but he is under contract, love how we all treat our players as chess pieces (yep, I'm guilty of it too). If he fires then we'll want to keep him, if he doesn't then the only way we'll be able to trade him is to pay massive amounts of his salary while he inevitably hits career best form for another club. We pick and stick at the Swans, how can we expect players to honour a contract when we won't do the same?Comment
