Trade update: Tom Mitchell - October 12, 2016 - sydneyswans.com.au

So right now we have picks 14,17,38,56

ok....... I don't believe Tom Harley would have indicated that the Swans will be still present in the trade period if they won't be. Tom said there could be plenty of action to come

So i am going to take a guess from Toms comments:

1. we are going to try and improve our 1st rounds picks 14 and 17 as a minimum and if we end up swapping 38 out for 23 in from the Hawks we are looking fairly sharp with 14,17,23ish

2. we have obviously identified some young talent in the 1st round of the draft minimum that we like the look of........ and given Mills and Heeney both played Snr Football in their first year recruited so who knows with two more picks in the top 20 ?

3. considering how many injuries we had in 2016 i am bullish on our roster

There are 8 to 13 players who will go to a new level in Snr Footy depending on injuries etc.........that is a lot of improvement in the team......ALOT !!!

Plus potentially two draft picks in the 1st round that could play some Snr football !!!

Given that Deano is off the trade table apparently I would say that we now have five players leaving. I hope that with the $550,000+ we have saved on Mitchell that we can now bump up the contracts of Nankervis and Towers and keep them at the club. And we should have some change for a sign on fee for Isaac's new contract.

If we can get picks 14,17 and 23 from the draft I'd be very happy. Plus I think we'll keep Pick 54 in reserve for Jake Brown.

So that's four picks in and five out. We are committed to upgrading Papley and Newman and you'd think Marsh also has a compelling case. With the rookie list on its last legs I'm just wondering if we'll bite the bullet and extend our list to 40 for 2017 which we should also be able to fund with the money we save on Mitchell given that a first year draftee is on about $75K

So, with the $550K we save on Tom we use $200,000 to upgrade Nanka and Towers, $150,000 extending the list and $200,000 as sign on for Heeney

If we get those picks I'd like to see us take Berry and Gallucci as our first rounders and maybe the best available KPD with 23.

From all reports it's a reasonably even draft well into the 30s so we should get three good kids, Gallucci's tyres have been pumped up massively since the combine but Pick 14 should go close to getting him

It will be really interesting to see what the Bombers do with their pick 1, which by the way I think is a disgrace and that they should have been put at the end of each round this year as soon as they lost their appeal. We get punished for breaking no rules and they get rewarded, go figure.....

I have no doubt that if the Bombers pick Setterfield at Pick 1 then GWS will call their bluff. They just say "thanks for McGrath and/or McGluggage" and pick up the other academy kids they want.

I'm not sure, though, what Gold Coast will do if Essendon are assholes and phantom pick Bowes, which I am sure knobs like Eddie are egging them on to do. I think they probably feel emotionally invested in Bowes but if they really rate McGluggage as better than Bowes then in many ways they'd be better off leaving Bowes with Essendon (I'm still basing this on them getting Pick 2 from the Lions) which would let them also get Brodie at 4 given that GWS are rumoured to really want McGrath.

At some stage a club will need to call out phantom bidding and I just hope it is this year

It's hard to know where the chips will fall in this draft. Once you get past the top 8 or 9 picks opinions vary widely. A lot will depend where our 3rd pick falls in the end as well.

I do like Jarrod Berry and would take him at 14 if available. He seems very much like a Callum Mills in the way he plays and his leadership. I also like Alex Witherden, but wouldn't take him at 14, although he may well be worth it. I like Will Hayward somewhere in the 2nd round, but he may be a bit too much like Gary Rohan.

Josh Battle is an interesting prospect if available at 17, looking to get another KPF for a post Tippett era. Griffin Logue would be a possible 1st round pick as well, especially if Berry is already taken. There will be a number of KPDs available through the latter parts of the 2nd round.

I'd be looking for good skills, decision making and work ethic. No go-homers. (I don't care that GWS lost Cam McCarthy for nothing, because they're already way too strong a club, but the AFL should have banned that cry baby for pulling that kind of stunt. It sets such a bad example.)

Harley saying that Towers and Nanka are required players means that they are on the trade table, but we won't be taking unders for them. I think they both should go. I'd also have Marsh and BJ up for trade as well for the right price (which wouldn't be much).

If you look at the teams to beat over the next five years, they're all bursting with young talent who are peaking at the same time. The prospects for GWS (at least) is medium to long term dominance. I wouldn't be surprised if we focus on the draft, play a much smaller role in trade week and simply trade for picks. Our rookie list is solid, we've had the blessing of seeing a handful of first & second year players become guns. We have a solid senior list already, perhaps the focus will be on cultivating first and second round talent who can come in hot on the heels of the likes of Heeney, Mills, Papley etc.

I think we need to add some class and polish to our grunt on the inside and plenty of speed. We also could use some height down back and forward so it will be interesting to see what we go with. We should be able to draft some decent quality players with those picks. Perhaps not elite talent, but hopefully a couple of draft gems unlike our past first round efforts!

The top five is almost universally agreed as McGrath, McCluggage, Brodie, Ainsworth and Bowes. Marshall, English, Petrevski-Seton, Setterfield and Perryman also seem to be referred to as top 10 first rounders.

We should be pretty confident of getting three very good quality draftees this year and as a club I believe we will only be behind GWS and Gold Coast, and maybe the Bombers (with their ill-gotten gains) in terms of the batch of recruits we bring in. Which when you think about who we've blooded this year and who we have waiting in the wings is really really exciting.

Tom Harley said this is the 1st time since 2009 that we have had 2 picks in the 1st round. This may change depending on what other clubs do as pick 17 is 'just' in the 1st round.

I would also add a roughy of Veneables..suppose to be a real burst power midfielder (i.e Dangerfield) that really gets in a bursts out of packs...which is something i think we do lack in our a midfield..I think Logue will definitely be handy but hard to see him possibly around our pick from his combine results....

Just listened to Tom Harley on trade radio and found it interesting when asked about us being interested in stocking up our key backs whether it be in the draft this year or next year. He rattled off a lot of names including Alex Johnson and even mentioned we a have a couple on our rookie list. What has stood out to me for a long time is the deafening silence from the club on Michael Talia and if he still fits into our plans. Would really like to hear an update on his status.

Just on key backs I do like the look of Logue in the draft and would love to add a player of his type to our backline! Would free up a number of options and appears to have neat skills too along with his great size and athletic ability. Like the look of his draft video on YouTube!

I really hope we don't do that as it does appear to be a fairly deep draft, especially into the 2nd round and we could add a couple of nice pieces to our list with the 2 first rounders. As I said before I would love to add a player like Griffin Logue to our backline with our first pick and then why not go with the W.A. double and draft Sam Powell-Pepper with 17! As stated in a previous post, Venebles could add something we need also. If people haven't already, check out AFL Draft Central on youtube and check out their videos and tell me that those mentioned (amongst others) wouldn't look good in Red and White next year and give us some attributes we most definitely need!

I listened to Tom Harley on both Trade Radio and SEN, and like troyjones2525 was waiting for the name of Michael Talia to pop up. It was really negligent of the radio show hosts to overlook this and not ask the question. But the absence of his name does raise questions. The good news is the positive outlook for AJ and that we are looking too extend Sam Reid's contract. We also have some flexibility and depth in the KPP department with Abe Davis, so Talia doesn't have to be part of the long term picture if that's the way it goes.

It sounds from Tom's comments that moving up 3 places in the 2nd and 3rd rounds is the most likely scenario to complete the Mitchell trade. There should be a good KPD available in the mid 30s if we don't go for one with our first rounders.

I think we can possibly improve our position if we sent Hawthorn's 2nd rounder and Towers to Brisbane for pick 21.

Our recent record with the draft is very good and feel we are in an excellent position to improve our list and continue to challenge for premierships well into the future.
