Yeah - I can't seem to find the article in any of the Melbourne papers about S.Mitchell being squeezed out because of T.Mitchell, Vickery and O'Meara. Thought it would be a logical part II to the one the other day about Buddy causing us issues.

I wonder if we'll ever find out the full story behind Hawthorn's plans.

They're either ice cold-blooded and ruthless in re-signing all their older players, knowing they couldn't keep them all, but wanted to keep their options open just in case they couldn't end up getting T.Mitchell and O'Meara. And then once they landed those recruits, started going through their 4-time premiership players and seeing who they could send packing.

Alternatively, perhaps T.Mitchell wasn't the sure thing everyone had been saying all along, they had the impression he would probably re-sign with Sydney eventually, and therefore found themselves in a bind when he actually said yes.

Either way, it is a massive call to push out a club legend, who just won your B&F, and you had re-signed a few months prior. Fair enough Hawthorn have plenty of credits in the bank, but if any other club did that, they would be universally labelled a disgrace for doing it - but Hawthorn actually get credit in many quarters for making a bold/brave list management decision, they're helping the player transition into coaching etc etc.

In any case, hopefully T.Mitchell's shoulders are OK because he is going to carry a pretty heavy weight of expectation. O'Meara hasn't played for 2 years and there just has to be massive queries about whether he can become the player that his talent would suggest, and Vickery finished this year not getting a game for Richmond.

So T.Mitchell could well be the one remaining player down the track that is always linked to Hawthorn having to turf out Sam.

      Trade paperwork lodged:
      Sydney Swans trade Tom Mitchell & rd 3 selection (curr. pick 57) to Hawthorn for rd1 (14) & rd 3 on-traded (52).

This values Mitchell at pick 13.

I think that what probably happened was that Clarko said a couple of months ago to the older players that they are getting a 1 year deal on reduced salary so that they can fit in some young guns, and in the meantime he would understand if they looked elsewhere, in fact if one of them wanted to leave then they would help facilitate a deal. The problem was that both Mitchell and Lewis both raced out the door ( a la The Amazing Race) and were on the phone to their managers to see what could be done. Mitchell's deal was tabled to the Hawthorn admin first so they decided to do it, then up came Lewis's manager all out of breath with an offer for Jordan from Melbourne but Hawthorn said "sorry, you are second - Team Mitchell was here before you."

Now Hawthorn has to manage the damage they have done and Lewis has to play out his last year for peanuts.

I've been reading those trade whisperer quotes on Twitter. Has he/she got anything right? Genuine question.

"St Kilda offering pick 10" e.g. I know for a fact that this was a load of hogwash.

Methinks it (The Trade Whisperer) is a parody account having fun yanking everyone's chain.

I don't see the benefit to the Hawthorn players in re-signing at the time though, under that scenario, particularly given it was only a couple of months ago.

If Hawthorn had flagged the possibility at the time, and some were so keen to consider that option, surely you just let the year play out and then make a decision at this time of year. The players would have had total freedom to choose if and where to go, being free agents.

If the players were happy to accept reduced deals back then, it's no different to waiting until now after most of the money was thrown at their new recruits.

I think it's far less friendly and harmonious than Hawthorn are painting it as - but I suppose who cares, it's their mess to deal with.

Re: accepting pick 14 for Mitchell early in the trade period, Tom Harley has said part of the reason was to signal to other clubs that we own both 14 and 17 - and are open to swaps that might further improve that position.

Which makes sense - given we have no Academy points to worry about, all the other clubs that do are flinging good picks around all over the place (as well as other clubs trying to do deals with them).

I would now be reluctant to draft any WA player, which is simply not right. The AFL need to clamp down of this. What is our El Primo Gillo doing about it? Probably spending time dreaming up new ways to punish the Swans.

There's whispering that Sydney want O'Meara. That would have to involve trading Tippett. Stay tuned.

As Tom Harley mentioned earlier in the week, we're looking to package 14+17 (2,186 points value) to move up the draft order.

I would think we've got our eye on one of the following -
4 (value 2,034) - Gold Coast. Do they need points for academy picks?? This would give them a 152 point boost. Unlikely though.
5 (value -1,878) - Carlton. GWS are looking at this for Pickett and Marchbank. Make it a 3 way with us, so GWS get 14+17 for a 308 point increase.
6 (value - 1,751) - Richmond. Gold Coast want this for Prestia. Richmond wont budge. Will we get involved? If we trade 14+17 for 6, Richmond could potentially package 14 and a second rounder for Prestia (Tom Mitchell trade as an indicator of value) whilst remaining in the first round with pick 17.
                        Ed Considine's day out - Round 3, 16th April 1995.
11 Kicks, 13 Handballs, 8 Marks, 1 Goal, 1 Behind, 1 Tackle, 1 Hitout, 3 Brownlow votes (his only votes)

I hope we go down this route. We've got quality rookies to upgrade and not many players to go out the door

If the Swans are only going to take 3 players in the draft, why would they upgrade pick 57 to 52? Implies more shenanigans to come

Yep, packaging 14+17 for an upgrade.

Hypothetically we would take the following to the draft -
                                Pick 5
                                Pick 39
