We often poke fun at Damian Barrett's "Sliding Doors" segments but this week's take on Hawthorn is nice.

Outstanding post Meg, especially the Sharwood piece, which I hadn't seen before.
Pardon a bit of trivia: Those muscles - whoa!

So many, many quotable lines. But this stands out: "Once it became clear that Jason Akermanis, Andrew Bolt, Miranda Devine, Alan Jones and Sam Newman were all on one side of an argument, that really should have been an end to it." And might I add, to give a more contemporary touch, Tom Elliott.Comment

Brilliant.
Thanks for sharing.
xxxxWild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Well written.
I'm surprised by how angry, disappointed and emotional I still get when I read about (or watch clips of) that time. Then I think, If I'm this angry and upset as an anglo woman, with no personal connection to indigenous culture, I can't begin to imagine how upset and furious Adam would have been and has every right to still feel, along wtih the indigenous community in general. That whole time frame really does hold a mirror up to the general population of Australia and jesus, it's not a pretty reflection.Life's not a spectator sportComment

I read that article too. It was quite unlike the articles we normally read on the afl site in that it was written in a very complicated way. It could have dealt with the issues in a more concise and direct way. I read to the end but I doubt the run-of-the-mill afl fan would.
Is this the AFL starting to raise awareness of The Final Quarter being on TV on 18 July?Comment

An outstanding piece - thanks Sandridge - and I particularly liked your picking up the list of drongoes Bloods05. A pox on their houses. So many, many quotable lines. that mystifying echelon of white people who presume to instruct black people in what does and does not constitute racism the line that stood out for me.
I've read one of his other books, 'It's Too Late To Die Young Now' about his rock journalism experiences. He has written for a number of music magazines for a few decades. I wasn't aware of his AFL / VFL interest. It's very hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who's learning to play violin. That's what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.

The note at the end identifies that it's an extract from a book, rather than a piece written for (online) mainstream media. So it's a different genre, and it does read a bit differently. You may be right that many people (including those who would benefit most from reading about it) won't make it to the end, but there have been many more concise accounts of the same events for those who want things short and simple.I read that article too.
