Noticed this piece on the Tigers intra, my bolding -
With Shaun Hampson consigned to running the boundary on Saturday and erstwhile main ruckman Ivan Magic transitioning to coaching, the job would appear Nankervis' to lose and he looked sharp in the centre and used his mobility to get to contests and make an impact around the ground.
Mobility, Nankervis? has he suddenly got faster or was the Tiges intra played at slow pace a bit like they played last year?Comment

The Tigers are still hurting about losing their greatest ruckman of all time to us, so you have to expect a bit of media hype payback.Comment

I really had to think about that. How soon we forget.Comment

All correct. Barling got an injury and never played again; Rioli was blocked from playing for us because under the rules of the time, we could only recruit a certain number of players (two maybe?) from each club, and we already had our quota from Richmond.Comment

There were a couple of reasons cited for Rioli's failure to transfer:
- One is that Richmond failed to clear him.
- Another is that Rioli was prevented by the Swans breach of the (at the time) $1.2M salary cap.
- Rioli actually signed a contract to play with us in April 86 & players took cuts to fit his salary in the cap. By the end of April the VFL refused a permit for Rioli stating we were still over the cap (insisting on further team-mates pay cuts). In early May 86, a Federal Court order was obtained against the VFL to provide a permit to play for the Swans, however, Sydney were threatened with a $10K fine & loss of premiership points, so they declined to play Rioli. A week later Rioli was released from his Swans contract, clearing his return to Richmond (although he list his #17 with the Tigers, returning to wear #27)
- I also vaguely recall a rumour that South Fremantle had a deal with Richmond when they had originally released Rioli to the Tigers, that contributed to his failure to be released.
As for the other Richmond players at the time, Barling signed for the 86 season, was injured (knee) and then when finally fit, couldn't play because of salary cap constraints. He was loaned to his original club (Birchip), with the intention of playing with the Swans in 87. An ACL reconstruction prevented that but he he did eventually debute for us in 89 (5 games) and a further 8 games again in 90.
A third player we attempted to recruit at the time from Richmond was Stephen James. He had reportedly signed with the Swans but was released in early Jan 86 & resumed with the Tigers.Last edited by goswannies; 11 February 2017, 11:27 PM.Comment

How times have changed. Buddy's current salary would have left room for a couple of Rookies in 86!Last edited by goswannies; 11 February 2017, 11:53 PM.Comment
