Why do they wear another player's jumper when training? Buddy was wearing #18.

Thanks graemed and AG - very helpful comments.

Nice rule changes formally announced today.

Third man up at ruck contests assists us as we have very good ruckmen.

Not paying head high frees if the tackle is deemed to have been good but the tackled player contributed to the high contact by shrugging or knee buckling, not sure we have many of those free kick milkers but a few other teams have a number of them.

Think both of these assist our team. Geelong is the team I think will hate both those rule changes the most.

It is unusual that AFL changes are to our benefit.

I'm glad that they're tightening the rules around head high frees. Players dropping their knees and hurling their heads back, was something that had been increasingly pissing me off, the last few seasons.

Yes, let's just hope they keep it up for the whole season and not have a reinterpretation on grand final day.

Final chance to watch the team at training.
Large group still not involved in skills or contact work including Parker, Franklin, Rose, Hayward, Newman, Mills, Sinclair, Laidler, Naismith, Allir, Cunningham, Dawson, McVeigh, Rohan, AJ and most recently, Towers who noticeably was not even kitted out.
The remaining group had match simulations.
The red team consisted of Tippett, Grundy, Heeney, Robinson, Reid, B Jack, Marsh, Jones and Hewitt to name a few.
The flouro team had Hannebery, Kennedy, K Jack, Rampe, Talia, Smith, Lloyd amongst others.
Surprisingly the red team had much the better of it.
I was watching the younger members more closely and for the most part.
Florent was impressive when allowed a midfield role and his disposal skills and vision are first rate.
Fisher may be a very handy pickup, he looks very quick, positions well and kicks truly.
Edwards has all the trade marks of a potentially good first grade player. He was being made to work hard defensively and responded well to the challenge.
Cameron was one out against Tippett the entire time and held his own.
Ronke was paired against Jones and B Jack and was clearly out pointed. Interesting to see them using B Jack in a defensive role. He may have found a niche.
Fox looked good at times and was very hard at it.

I like the idea of BJ in defence. Lock down on a player and run off when you get the chance, sounds like he could be capable in that role. Also good to hear the new guys in Florent, Cameron, Fisher and Edwards all looking the part

I'll go as far as saying that I think this may be BJ's only chance of extending his AFL career.

He lacks the instinct, skills and flair to play in the mids and doesn't have enough tricks to play up front. But he comes from good stock, is brave with a decent tank and has something that you can't teach and that is pure pace.

A few years ago he'd be a special as a tagger but, strangely AFAIAC, the tagger seems to redundant these days. So a lock down role down back is probably his best bet for getting his career back on track. There is a spot for a small defender in a few years with Smith's advancing years and also Smith and Mills could both be spending more time in the mids.

I really hope he can crack it this year, I can't help all the rubbish with his idiot parents wore him down last season so hoping for a good 2017.

As an aside, another small but important step to season 2017 with the delivery of the member pack this week. Happy with the scarf this year, thought the towel last year was a bit naff. Can't wait for the intra club.

Very happy with how the squad is looking. We recruited really well IMO with good coverage across the squad. I reckon Cameron could well challenge the rucks and we could well have the deepest ruck stocks in the league this year.

Our backline looks very strong with the emergence of Rampe as a superstar and Aliir last year. Add in Talia, Maibaum (who I think will be very good) and hopefully AJ and we just have huge depth.

The mids should be fine with Jones and Heeney slotting in to replace Tom. Mills I think will be given another year on the half back flank to bulk up a bit. It would be good if Florent can get 10-15 games under his belt this season but unlike last year with Mills it doesn't feel so urgent.

The forward line really depends on a fit Sam Reid as far as I am concerned. Buddy and Tippett just doesn't work as Tippett is just so immobile as a forward now, have a look at him when he played for Adelaide and he was just a different (and better) player - he has just bulked up too much so what we have now is the highest paid Ruckman in the league, albeit quite a good one. I get the feeling Hayward may be a season away. I'm not totally sold on Hewett as a forward and feel his long term future is as a big bodied mid in the JPK mould but I don't his body is quite there yet so I guess he'll be up front with Buddy and (hopefully) Reid. Papley should provide the crumbs and I can see Heeney and Parker playing cameos.

My bolter for the season is Edwards, I just get the feeling he'll give us the outside grunt we need

                            I agree re Edwards

He will fit what we need is my hope

But we haven't seen much of him so let's hope

He certainly has a lead as welll as a run and carry which at 190cm is really handy for us as a mix with Lloyd coming off the wings and HBFs

If Edwards becomes best 22, it will have been an inspired piece of recruiting. Just the type of player we need.

Liking what I'm hearing about Florent as well.

Please keep those training observations coming in folks :-)

I think teams are heading back towards including a "lock-down" player in their team although, the term "tagger" seems out of fashion.

Maybe Cap'n Kirk can have a whisper in BJ's ear....
