[QUOTE=Mug Punter;724761]Surely this isn't a serious post....
Why would we do that? And why would Tippett work a year for free? It's not his fault (or as you childishly call him, a rude @@@@@) that we offered him the money we did.
It's simple, we have a legally binding contract we are obliged to pay (unless someone crazily wants to take him off our hands) and we will pay it until the contract expires next year. Then we'll have that money for other players
- - - Updated - - -
Didn't Daisy Thomas just throw away a legally binding contract "with triggers" based on a few things but notwithstanding the fact that he had been well looked after previously.
Didn't Tippett get well over 1Mil in his first year after sitting out half the year ?
It makes sense, he gets 1.5M guaranteed over 3 yrs or $800K next year then either A) looks like a loser leaving a club yet again for money or B) Stays with Sydney with little negotiating power cos the Salary book is full
Maybe the 1.5 could read 1.8M but either way id be looking at thinning out that reported $800K hit next year

And he isnt working a year for free, his days of $800K are behind himComment

Nth Melb have publicly made it known they are chasing quality midfielders and are prepared to pay big dollars to do it. Im tipping they will finish in the bottom 3 on the ladder. If they offer Zak say a 4.5m/5yr deal and he chooses them as his preferred choice, there is no way they will offer their 1st round draft pick for him. In which case I can't see a deal happening that is fair for us. North won't care too much as they would likely get him in the preseason draft if we play hard ball. Which we rarely do. I'm hoping we can come up with the cash to resign him. I guess we will know later in the year how much he is worth.Comment

That is a nice point, chuckie. Like many, I thought North would be big sliders this year and so it has proven. However, given their form so far this year, including the losses but especially the past couple of weeks, I'm not so sure that they are going to finish bottom 3 (hopefully we won't either) and it's an open question who will finish higher. So far their form has been better than ours. But we have more upside. All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

Does anybody think re signing Keiran Jack last year for three more years till 2019 was a great deal ? Was for Keiran I hope we got a good deal because he was a local - not looking like a great deal at this stage based on his form and injuries over the last couple of years ? Hope we don't lose Jones because of $$$Comment

Sam Reid is on the front page again: Free agency could see key Swan Sam Reid head to Victoria - AFL.com.au
Numbers are now going as high as 800k pa, which is well above what we would be willing to pay him. I do think it would have to be an offer he can't refuse to make him leave. For all we know their may not be enough money to take his partner away from her mummy.
With more than one team in the picture and the fact that a club can get him without giving up a player or a pick, certainly makes Reid the most attractive forward on the market this year. Collingwood and Richmond are desperate for someone like him.
That sort of offer would have to draw a first round pick after our own, so likely to be in the top 10 unless we make a miracle run from here. That would be more than fair compensation if he does go, so I wouldn't be all that upset if it happened. It's the one upside of having a poor season in that if we do lose a FA like Reid, we should get more for him than we would in a trade. It will have a lot of heads spinning if we got a better pick for Reid than Hawthorn got for Buddy.
Well, good luck to him if he want to go. He should have a great selection of dinner guests at his new club.

We could well lose both Reid and Jones because I don't believe there is anything to be gained by paying overs for any player. If that was the case we could go in with two first rounders but I'd suspect we'll get a second rounder for Reid. (Just out of interest what are the rubbery factors for deciding RFA compensation).
If that happens then we ourselves have a million of our own wages bill and will be entering into out own rebuild.
This situation is pretty much our of our control, I'm sure we can offer what are considered fair offer to both Zak and Sam but that may not be enough. The players are worth whatever someone else is prepared to pay and at the moment we have a player market totally out of control. I'm just glad we've locked away most of our senior talent and I'm glad we're not a player in chasing players on overs too.Comment

Based on his last 5 yrs of substantial overs
I know he us under contract but do tou really think guys dont take pay cuts to keep teammates especially older guys who have been significantly looked after

Not a chance and nor should he, his salary is our problem not his. And the whole debate opens up a whole can of worms, by your "logic" then players who over-perform should as for their salaries to be topped up in their current contract as well.
I do suspect Tippett may stay with us after next year but if he does it will be on $200,000 base plus match payments I'd suggest. But it won't come out of his current contractComment

?
Seriously, it is a fair point. If his wife has a good job that is well paid and she enjoys then as a couple a $150-200,000 pre-tax (I reckon we'll go to $650,000 tops) pay rise for him may not be enough. Sure she could get lined up a cushy job down there with some North Melbourne connection but is that really what a yopung independent career wants? To be in a job where she is defined by their partner plus the entire nauseating WAG scene down there? I don't think so....
I think we'll get close enough for Sam to stay, especially if we get him on a six year deal, and six years even at $650,000 a year really is enough to set them up for life pretty much.
Having said that, I do think we'll lose Zak because he'll get an offer way overf market back in Melbourne. The only possibility is that the others cancel themselves out.
Looking now, North are targeting both Dusty and Kelly with massive offers. My gut is they'll get neither because North are a horrible club with horrible people and I think they are a long way off winning a flag. But if they do then their chances of going after Zak drop a lot because even with all their cap stashed away they'll need every cent for those two to consider going to that @@@@hole. And as we all know the doomsday scenario is that Norf get Zak for nowt at the PSD.
If Norf were to get Dusty then Richmond suddenly become a major player but they apparently have their sights set on Josh Schache who would take their 2 first rounders. The first round comp pick they get for Dusty suddenly makes this a doable deal. Personally I think Dusty would be mad to leave Tigerland but the kid ainbt the smartest tool in the shed.
The Sainters behaviour, the third club mooted to have cash to spend, will be interesting. Personally I'd stay clear of Fyfe, I don't think he is the player he once was and instead of one gun they could probably go for Martin as a RFA and afford Jones with their first rounder and still take their Hawks first rounder. Or do they go for Schache and Jones with their two first rounders and do their best with the free agents. Regardless of what happens I think that the Saints' behaviour and agenda will largely shape this year's trade period.Comment
