If GC lose May then their situation in terms of retention won't be much better than the Suns. And I can see GWS starting to get picked to pieces too, sure their list is deep and good but their drafting this year is pretty poor and they'll start to lose a few RFAs in 2020.

I think we are the best option by far in terms of retention. The whole GWS setup and crowds reeks of a carnival ride and for a professional sportsmen on $300K + Sydney is a pretty good place to live. And I also think that the off field opportunities are increasing. And the more mature players appreciate being out of the Melbourne bubble which is stifling and actually quite weird

How much were Brisbane dudded by the southern clubs in trade negotiations when they last had go homers? They were dudded a heap. So what do Melbourne clubs offer this time for a number 2 draft pick? Watch them try it all again.

The comp is so skewed towards Vic clubs it's not funny.

And in the same breath @@@@@@ on academies as much as possible. Why? Because they know it's a big part of the solution to the problem thus if academies were gone they get to continually r@pe the northern clubs at bargain basement costs. Like I keep saying hypocritical liers.

I agree. I get the go home factor and I think the inherent risk is unavoidable.

But then the only solution to giving a fair go is attacked when a decent player is produced. This will be a body blow to the Lions and to make things worse you can bet that whatever Melbourne club he goes to will shaft them on the trade too. Richmond have two mid to late first rounders this year (theirs and Port's) - they should offer both picks for Josh if they are genuine and even then it will still be a bitter pill but I can just see the Lions having to accept Pick 14 for a #2 KPF.

For the life of me I don't understand why the afl scrapped the veterans list which was the one way to entice players to stay with the one club.

Surely both players and fans prefer that. What was the issue?

It's not just that. From everything I've heard the northern clubs lean towards picking Vic country kids as they handle the move easier than the metro kids if picking a player from Victoria. No coincidence that Hayward has signed on for an extra year n Florent hasn't yet. I have no doubt atleast a few Melbourne clubs have kept contact with him since his move to Sydney. So basically they have a smaller draft pool to pick from but you'll never hear this bought up from the Melbourne media.

It was the complete rort of the cap that destroyed the veterans list. Hawthorn manipulated it to perfection n that's why the could afford to keep that great list together for so long when half the players salary is outside the cap.

Zak Jones contract, AFL trade period: interest in Sydney Swans midfielder from four Victorian clubs, Essendon, Melbourne, North Melbourne, St Kilda | Fox Sports

              Luckily though:
"Jones has been happy in Sydney and there is no suggestion that he is keen to come home at this stage of his career after what has been a breakout season."

                [QUOTE=Mug Punter;725768]

The money being quoted ($600K for Jones and Reid $800K) is right on the money for mine and even then it may not be enough. You have the Saints, St Kilda, North and Carlton planning for this for years and they have a couple of million to play with.

Is take 1st rounders now for both of them if that is what they are after

Id expect both of them to get 5yr deals and end up on those figures but not now

What other teams will pay is irrelevant to stay together

Kennedy could have got 1.2m to go home this year but stayed and id be surprised if he is on 750k

Jones and Reid are not Kennedy not evem close

So was Mitchell when discussion started last year just wait and see at this point.

Also isn't the Salary cap going up 20% next year? McVeigh may possibly retire at the end of the year and wouldn't mind trading Tippett to keep Reid if required honestly which has been thrown up on the radio. Collingwood Richmond Carlton North Saints Melbourne he has value at the trade table particularly the last three.

Wouldn't pay Jones more than what ever Heeney is one which probably isn't 600k. Please correct me if I'm wrong he signed a 5 or 6 year deal.

Melican also needs to be signed up out of contract this year.

Just a side note Jake Lloyd and Newman come out of contract next year so those two will be targeted for good coin. Interested to see how that plays out

On Melbourne radio yesterday Jim Bartel said that the clubs salary cap over this year and the next two years has to average 100% payment meaning that most clubs are only paying 95% this year knowing there is some good players coming out of contract and they will offer front end contracts to these players and pay 105% of there salary caps next year and 100% the following so that it averages 100% if this is the case it could be very hard to match offers from other clubs.

Jones stayed last contract time and he wasn't established in the 22 then. Just can't see him moving for money now that he's best 22, playing midfield which he wants and for a perennial flag contender.

Jones has to be traded for and no suitors have a high enough pick for us to be willing to trade given he is a required player.

The cap has just gone up a million plus more so all clubs, including us, are flush with money. Reckon Jones and Reid stay.

As some of you may know, Matt80 has been allowed a limited return to RWO and is posting away from the limelight under the moniker 'Club80' in the 'Sandpit' (under the non-footy forums). He has made an interesting proposal related to this thread that I think is worth repeating here so we can consider and discuss. He suggests:

                          * trading Tippett to Brisbane at the end of this season, together with our first round pick, in return for Brisbane's 2018 2nd round pick and them picking up all of Tippo's salary for 2018.

At first I was dismissive and then I thought maybe this proposal does have some merit. Currently my main concern is that this deal does not make sense for Brisbane because they are far from the 'premiership window'. Anyway, if you're interested in seeing the discussion about the proposal that's happened so far, you can look in the Sandpit. Otherwise, I'd be interested to know what others think about this proposal - worthwhile or stupid?

                            I agree.
I think his proposal has merit. It is thinking outside the square. Matt often does that and i quite like it. Though it depends on how much we are desperate to free up his salary for other players. But I'm not sure Brisbane would be interested in Tippett now.

What about Tippett to Gold Coast for May?

I think losing our current best ruck/forward and first round draft pick to free up some cash is a bad idea. Tippett is still a good player for us when he gets his body right plus missing out on a first round draft pick could be costly. I guess it all depends on how tight our salary cap actually is and whether freeing up the Tippett money will allow us to resign Jones/Reid where we otherwise couldn't.

If there was a Tippett trade on the table at the end of the year I'd be all for it but not at the cost of our first round draft pick (unless we get there 2019 first round draft pick in return).

My impression is that Reid will re-sign with the club as he's been with us since 2010 and seems to be more settled in Sydney. Jones I'm not so sure about, he may leave just to get back to Melbourne. Can't begrudge him for that
